    Speeding things up!

    Greetings!

    BIND-PE (Berkeley Internet Name Domain - Personal Edition) http://ntcanuck.com/downloads.htm

    AnalogX has a similar DNS caching server FastCache - also free. http://www.analogx.com

    BIND-PE is a unique optimized (free) Domain Name Server which auto-installs in DNS Caching mode (full DNS Server capable). For Microsoft Windows® 2000/XP/NET series workstations or servers.

    Benefits:

    * Fail-safe DNS
    * Faster web site access
    * Dependable resolutions
    * Access all online domains

    I've seen this mentioned several times on "tweak" sites.

    [color=royal blue]1. Anyone try this? Does it really make that much difference? Or are we talking microseconds?

    2. How does it compare to just using a host file for regularly visited sites?

    My firewall, Agnitum/Outpost, has dns caching capability.

    From personal experience..

    Plus side- Twice over the last couple of years when my current ISP's dns servers temporarily went down I wasn't bothered having to manually change the dns servers IP to some remote site in networking.

    Irrelevant side- it really would be milliseconds difference in time for the most part.

    Minus side- some websites especially large corporate ones like microsoft, often change their DNS #'s around regularly so you'd have to edit the entries every time or you'll never get to the new page.
