Monitor Won't Turn On
I have a Gateway Desktop System.
The monitor is a Gateway EV700 17 inch CRT.
Last night I went to turn it on an nothing happened.
I disconnected the cord and move the monitor to another power point and tried again - still no go.
The monitor has it's own power cord that plugs into the wall or circuit protection board - it does not have a power cord that comes from the box (like some systems).
It's not the cord because I tried it on the box and that powered up ok.
The good news is that I have an extended 3 year warranty that doesn't run out until January 2004
The bad new is that Gateway shipped out of Australia and I believe I'm no covered under the Asia-Pacific region - support being in Malaysia.
Reading through the warranty I get the impression that I'm now an 'International Customer' and as such would have to pay all shipping costs to get it to my closest support site
So, given the weight of the monitor I think that could be a very costly exercise and it would be cheaper to buy a new one.
I haven't contacted Gateway to confirm my situation yet, but inthe mean time is there anything simple I could check for such as a fuse.
I remember a few months back Reverend replaced a fuse but all sorts of warning about being fried were prevelant.

Cheers,
I managed to replace a tactile switch in our Fisher & Paykel washing machine easily enough, but that was simply a matter of unsoldering the old one and soldering in the new.
The circuit board was completely removable so no current.
Then there was the time I was re-wiring a light switch at night time with the lights on so I could see - doh.

I'm So Excited
I logged on to the Australian Gateway site and found a number for warranty service.
I rang it and apart form being on hold for about 20 minutes I discovered that warranty service was outsourced to another company but still based in Australia.
So they created a service request and will arrange for a delivery and swap of a new monitor for the old one.
Not only that but my warranty still has another 5 months to go.
So, no need to risk lighting myself up like a christmas tree, dressing up in weird rubber get up or being sprayed with shards of glass form a pressurised tube exploding.
I'm one happy chappy.
Here's the best thing:
When we bought the system (when Gateway were still in Oz), the sales man said
As part of the package you can have a 3 year exetended onsite / parts warranty or a WebCam
.
My wife said she liked the idea of the WebCam and I said that the warranty would be a better option and that we could get a WebCam later if we wanted.
We never ended up buying that WebCam - but are we glad that we got the extended warranty ??
I think you all know the answer.

For those thinking of attempting their own TV & monitor repairs reading through parts of that would have been enough to probably scare me of the idea.
