    Virus - Worm - Help !!!!!

I'm trying to help a friend with his computer. He writes books among other things (a search of the web brought up hundreds of links about his writings) and his computer appears to be "infected" with something.

He had had the KAK worm but we checked for that yesterday and there is no trace of it. Things now are as below described to me..

    "Moke:

Thank you for your help yesterday. My "worm" problem persists. It seems to be centered around MS Outlook Express, although now my entire computer has slowed down to the point of being inoperatable. I need help and direction:

    Here is what is happening:

    1. When I boot up, the dial up software attempts to load as part of the start up, but is not in the start up menu.

Moke Note: There is no DUN item in any of the places where you would find something
starting at startup I.E. autoexec.bat, .ini's RUN keys in the Registry Etc., the startup folder Etc.??

    2. When I try to print, it can take from 5 minutes to never to load and print. This is also now true with Words 8.0. I try to load a document, and it might take up to 2 or 3 minutes to load, and never prints.

    3. When I attempt to use defrag, it will come up with an error message and I need to hard crash my computer to reset it. Scan disk works fine in both reboot and windows.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated now, since I am dead in the water and need my computer to make a living. This is the second time for this type of problem.

    4. A tech shop fixed it last time, saying it was something Norton Anti-Virus did not yet know about. They have been gone for two
weeks, so I'm at a loss as to where to turn at the moment."

Folks any ideas will be appreciated as my friend has a book (now in the computer) due at the publishers shortly.

Hit it with Norton 2000 antivirus with the latest virus signatures off their website dated 11/13/00
Sounds like a virus to me
How are the hard disk controllers reported in device manager? Any Splats?
Anything unusual in the performance tab?
In the beginning there was the command line

The one thing that jumps out at me is Norton. Their 11/06 update was real buggy and caused many problems. It has since been fixed.

KAK is one of the nastier worms but you can find a killer/fix for it on the symantic web site.

Thanks to all for the help. The problem turned out to be an attempt by parties unknown to auto download (steal) info off my friend's system. A quick on site examination revealed the devil and a removal of it's files and Registry entries defeated it. We are now attempting to backtrack to the source for obvious reasons.
