Music Companies Vow to Sue Hundreds of Internet Users Sharing Songs

Well we all knew it would come to this. So why is this newsworthy? I suspect any public outcry that comes now will be too little too late.

I think the music companies are starting a war. The hackers will have a field day with their sites(rightly so)If they are smart they'll start a paid(small fee)service. I personally do not object to paying $.99 to D/L a song that I like. But DO object to paying $14-19 dollars for a CD with one good song on it. Hatch is obviously on the payroll of the music companies.

They're already there. Ever heard of iTunes? Apple will be releasing a PC version supposedly by fall 2003. Perhaps I'm getting old or I attach more to the value of a dollar, even a Cdn. dollar, but at a buck a pop it's too much.

If and when the RIAA opens a Canadian chapter then maybe I'll start worrying. But then I won't worry too much because the RIAA will find much more difficult hurdles to jump. Cdn. law doesn't recognise the right of privately independant organizations to force ISPs to turn over information about thier clients.

Don't know about the payroll but they did mention on Fox News the day this story broke that Hatch is a songwriter. He even has a website devoted to his music and it's cleverly titled The Music Of Orrin Hatch.

So now we see the good Senator's motivation....MONEY. Gee, there's a big surprise, huh?

Oh, yeah...found out a day or so ago that after ole' Orrin made his ill-advised statement about The Evil Music Sharers, somebody checked out his website and discovered it was using an unlicensed copy of Milonic Solutions' JavaScript code. It was only after this was discovered (see story here) that Hatch's people decided to "start the registration process."

I totally agree! To me, $1 per song is about the average price per song if I buy a CD. If I'm downloading, I'm not getting as good a quality of song. Plus there is virtually no extra cost to the company for each person who downloads a song. Whereas the distribution costs associated with recording a CD and getting it out to the store, packaging, etc., should be quite significant. To me, no more than $0.50 per song is fair.
