    Looking for a download "commenter"

This thread reminded me of a program that I need, and was wondering if anyone has ever seen:

Something that would allow one to add "comments" or "reminders" to a file that you download, so that you can better remember why you downloaded it at a later time.

In other words, when I download 1by1.zip, I can add: "That little mp3 player that so-and-so recommended over at the such-and-such forum."

Anybody know of anything like this, or even a tip or technique that they use to accomplish the same thing?

    Thanks all, Dex

WinZip has the ability to add a comment to a zip file. Open WinZip, then open the file, then go to the toolbar in WinZip at Actions\Comment, type in the comment and select Save. To add the Comment function to the toolbar as an icon right click on the toolbar and then Select Buttons. It will be in the left window.

I've used GetRight, and it works very well for what you are wanting.

I make a folder for each download and a text file into which I can paste info from where it was downloaded. Sometimes I put in a screenshot image. The folder is convenient for unzipping files, especially those that have multiple files I don't want to mix into a multiple use directory.

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas folks.
I really like Dan's idea of saving a "snapshot"
of the web page with the file. I can just give it the same
name, but it'll be a .BMP or .JPG and it will always be
grouped along with the original file til I can get around
to deciding what to do with it later.

    Thanks Dan.

A quick way is just add it to the name of the file.

You don't need software, just right click on any file>properties>Summary>add comments etc.

This is interesting. I've never seen or heard of this "feature"
before, so I started clicking on the "properties" of a bunch of
random files and made these observations:

All files have a General tab.
Some files have a version tab.
Archive files have an Archive tab.

But only one file, (Fruity-Loops demo install executable),
had a Summary tab. Which begs the question,
where does the Summary tab originate from? Does
it have to be included when the file was first created?
Does the "installer" create it? Is there some software
program that we both have installed that supplies this
    "feature"?

    BTW - I'm using Win98SE.

Anyway, this merits deeper investigation. Its such a
great feature if it worked on all files.

It's been so long since I've used '98 that I'm not sure what the issue is. Every file on my XP systems have the "Summary" tab.

Dex, what I find handy--and it may be so simple that it "may not" work--is notepad. I just type whatever I want to say about the download or I may just c/p what describes the program from the page I get the download. Just be careful to use all or as much of the download's name in the file title!! Notepad is already on your PC! OR, you can use all of the download name and simply add the word info at the end of the file name.
