    Deleting Porn

    Hi
I am not sure whether this should go here in the XP forum or somewhere else....My problem is that my children have inadvertently loaded a link to a porn site (Hardsex) to the desktop - I am told it was because of a pop-up. When I went to the link on the desktop and tried to delete it says "access denied" and I have the same problem using Windows explorer. How do I remove the link and any associated stuff that may have come with it? Thanks as ever for your help.

Try running Spybot to see if that will remove it:

    Spybot S & D

If that won't do it try the default Admin account, it has a higher level of priveleges than your normal admin account. To log in hit Ctrl>Alt>Del twice at the login screen and you'll get a Win2000 style login box. Type "Administrator" as the username and the password that you supplied when you first installed Windows (if any).

Thank you for the suggestions - did both things you suggested and the problem has resolved. Now in the process of trying to sort out some sort of internet security....does anyone know anything that is selective - the MS IE security tends to black out almost everything.

The best thing to do is to give your kids a User account. The nature of a User account is that they won't have permissions to install anything.

Also make sure you have a goos AV program kept up to date all the time, a good firewall (I recommend Norton Internet Security, it nicely combines these functions), and run Spybot regularly.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options>Security, click on Custom Level and make sure that you've got "Download signed ActiveX controls" set to Prompt, and "Download unsigned ActiveX controls" set to Disable. In the Privacy tab, click on Advanced and set "Third party cookies" to Block, and check "Allow session cookies".

While you're in "Internet Options", check out the "Content Advisor" section under the "Content" tab.

I second the nomination of Norton Internet Security.

I try to limit proselytizing to people about Mozilla, but there are many out there that don't realize that there are other browsers on the same league (IMO even better) than IE. It can block popups, cookies, ads, has standards support, quick bug fixes, and it does not install c**p you don't want behind your back. On the other hand, there are sites out there that are IE only. Try it and decide for yourself I say.
