I am just wondering why this crap continues to pop up on my PC, when it never happened before. It is pretty unfair that I have to purchase something to keep them from getting onto my PC.

Anyone know of any free software that can help this??

    there are a number of things you need to do;
    1: administrative tools/services
stop messenger service [THIS IS NOT IM !]
this is an OPEN port by default that you need to close [UNLESS YOU'RE ON A NETWORKED SYSTEM]. CLOSES BACK DOOR POP UPS.

2: SET YOUR COOKIES SO THAT ACCEPT 1ST PARTY,ALLOW SESSION COOKIES AND BLOCK 3RD PARTY COOKIES.

    3: download AD-AWARE,ADD/REMOVE PRO,VCATCH,REGISTRY CLEANER & AVG [anti-virus],all of which are FREE!

    VCATCH:
    http://www.vcatch.com//download.html
    Welcome to VCatch

    Dear new VCatch user.

We would like to thank you for installing and registering VCatch and give you some information on this free Virus Catcher program.

When VCatch is running, you should see VCatch icon in the tray bar of your windows indicating VCatch is quietly protecting your system from web viruses. Whether you use an Email application, Web based Email, ICQ, or one of the file-sharing programs; VCatch is monitoring all incoming files and e-mail attachments and checks for suspicious files. In the event that VCatch detects that a file is suspected to be a virus, the software automatically deletes the file and notifies you.

VCatch has a unique automatic update mechanism. When a new virus is detected in the Net, VCatch automatically updates its virus definitions list in your computer. So once you install VCatch, you don't have to do anything else to be constantly protected.

VCatch was designed to use as little computer resources as possible. The software is very small and uses your computer resources only when one of the applications listed in the VCatch settings screen is running.

VCatch can run at the same time with any other antivirus program , without any conflicts or interruptions. VCatch detects viruses, but it won't clean infections. In other words this software prevents viruses from entering your computer rather than correct the PC once it is infected.

    ADD~REMOVE PRO:
    http://www.superwin.com
Maybe no one is like me, but you should see my Windows Add/Remove Programs list. It is full of
broken links. The only way to remove them is to open up the Registry and try to figure out where the
Uninstall entries are. I'm too lazy to do this more than once a year, so I wrote Add/Remove Pro.
Just run Add/Remove Pro and it will show you which links are bad. Press the Remove Entry button to
remove the entry. If you would like to uninstall a program, press the Uninstall Program button.

Bookmark Wizard is a little program with a simple wizard-like interface that generates an HTML page with all/selected links from your Internet Favorites folder. The links in the resulting page are grouped and sorted in ascending order like they are in your Favorites folder. You can specify colors for links and backgrounds, title, caption, etc., for your page. Also, you can exclude certain folders from being listed. Advanced users are able to edit the entire page template to customize it further. The resulting web page can be used as a links page on your homepage; you can send it to a friend or use it just as a startup page for your web browser etc.

Please note this program is not a HTML to Favorites converter, it can only create a HTML page from Favotires.

    AD-AWARE:
    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...id,7423,00.asp

spyware with the latest version of this free tool. Ad-aware scans your system--including removable drives--for the most common types of advertising spyware and safely removes offending software. The program works through intuitively designed wizards. Currently, the utility detects small ad programs from Adware, Aureate/Radiate, OnFlow, Comet-Cursor, Cydoor, Doubleclick, EverAd, Flyswat, OnFlow, TimeSink 5.0, and others.

Version 6.0 offers improvements (like a redesigned user interface) and safeguards for users who may be overzealous in removing adware/spyware components. Because many ad-supported programs won't function if you remove their ad modules, you may occasionally want to overrule an earlier decision to remove one of these components. Version 6.0 addresses this problem in two ways: It stores adware components in your Recycle Bin, where you can later retrieve them; and it provides a backup archive viewer for reviewing--and if necessary, restoring--components you've removed

your instinct to not pay anything to avoid these ads is correct. That is one huge post by earle. I would recommend starting with just zonealarm, free, from www.zonelabs.com, and if that doesn't work try posting back. Cookie handling and cleaning out your add/remove programs list (which can be done for free with tweakUI from microsoft) isn't going to stop popups.

Curiously, do you know where you can download that software for free? You had mentioned it was a free download, however, I couldn't find it on that site.

    Thanks!

Zone Labs makes money by selling their high-end products, so they make sure those are the ones that get the extra visibility on their website. The free Zone Alarm can be found here or by going to the zone labs' website, clicking on download&buy, the 'zone alarm' link, and 'download'.

Hi everyone, been a while so I figured I would share my status. The popups have been pretty much killed, which is good. I have RoadRunner, so my connection is supposed to be fast, however, it seems to be really slow lately (even cannot keep up with my typing sometimes??!!??) and I don't know if anything has gotten onto my PC again, or if it is something to do with ZoneLabs (Zone Alarm - has been working great). Please check out this scan log and let me know what you think.

Here are some important steps I did to get rid of ALL unwanted pop-ups.
    1. The minute I connected to cable broadband and installed XP, I got XXX pop-ups unrelated to internet explorer. I turned off the Windows Messaging service, and it stopped (haven't had one of those since).
    2. I have zonealarm (free version) firewall running.
    3. Spywareblaster
    4. Spybot S & D
    5. Ad-aware
    6. Google toolbar version 2 Beta. Apart from being the best search engine around, it also includes the best pop-up killer I have ever used. HIGHLY recommended!
