    files from 98 to 2000

    Hello all.

tomorrow I begint o build my first computer from scratch. I have done a lot of upgrading but this is the first ground up.
I am going to use 2000 and understand that I can check out files going from 2000 to 98 but not vice versa. Once this machine is complete, will there be any major problems setting up the old 98 on the network and copying needed files over to the 2000 machine.?

also I am wondering if there are any recommended tutorials for building a computer?

    thanks

Thanks for replying. any kind of files really. word, powerpoint, frontpage, pictures. I'll install most of the programs I have now so that isn't the issue. As long as I can access them it should be fine I have a Visioneer 7600 scanner that I already know won't work with 2000 so will set this computer up to retreive files from and use the scanner.

    Coops,

I can't see any probs seeing as you will be using the same program versions (word, excel, etc.). Even if you bought new versions for your new PC, they would be backwards compatible.

The only issue you may encounter by installing later versions of office, etc, would be that your 98 PC would not be able to read them - but the workaround for that is to save the files from the later version to an older format (available on all office programs).

Also, look at this link - it look as though your scanner IS compatible with 2000:

Another word of caution; if I remember correctly, W98 cannot understand NTFS file system (it uses FAT32) - so if you format your new PC hard drive on 2000 to use NTFS, your 98 PC will not be able to "see" the 2000 PC (anyone else free to correct me on this, as I'm a bit flaky on 98).

    Good luck.

Many thanks for the Visioneer info. Must be new as I couldn't find that info a few months ago. I won't be getting stuff from the win2000 for the 98 only getting the files from 98 to the 2000 so all should be fine.
    thaks for all your help

    Teknophobia:
"if I remember correctly, W98 cannot understand NTFS file system (it uses FAT32) - so if you format your new PC hard drive on 2000 to use NTFS, your 98 PC will not be able to "see" the 2000 PC"

This is true if the 2 file formats are on separate partitions on the same machine. However, over a network, 98 doesn't actually ever have to "see" the NTFS partition. It merely puts out a "network request" for the files. The OS on the NTFS partition then provides the files, so there isn't a problem.
