    Programs Slow First Time Opened

This just started. When I open a program or Windows Explorer it opens very, very slow the first time. If I close the program or Windows Explorer and re-open it, it will open fast the next time and each time thereafter. But, when I reboot the problem starts all over again. It almost appears that prefetch stops working after a reboot.

I checked all the normal things - defrag, check disk, msconfig, virus scan, temp files, temp internet files. Nothing works. I am loosing my hair. Can anyone help?

    Dell 8200
    Win XP Home SP1
    P4 1.8GHZ
    512 RAM

    Thanks a lot.

    Thanks Frebo.

Yes, I downloaded a windows update several days ago. In fact, I believe there were three of them. Everything seemed ok right after the updates. I had a whole bunch of restore points built up so I thought it was time to delete all but last one. So system restore is not an option.

I looked in add/remove and found 811493. So, yes, I did download that one. I never uninstalled one of these before. Should I uninstall this?

    What number is net frame?

Frebo you are THE MAN. Your tip led me to do some quick research on 811493. This is screwing up a lot of computers. I uninstalled it and now my computer is running like greased lightning again.

    Thanks again and again.

I did not download that one because I read about the problems it can cause before hand - something to do with "phantom" users, I believe.

    Hi Folks,

I'm glad to have read this thread, as I had the same experience. My system slowed down considerably, but after uninstalling the 811493 patch, I'm smelling burning rubber and nitro fumes again when I fire this bad boy up! Thanks!
