can the control panel be locked out?

have a slight problem where i work, (small town Fire Dept.) , have 5 computers at HQ, all with internet access via broadband..have about 45 people @ 10-11 per day using computers...the problem is that everyone likes to mess around with the settings, need a way to lock this down...any ideas or hints? thanks....

There's a NoControlPanel restriction, but it won't work in Windows 98.

You could try restricting access to Windows\control.exe by applying this tweak:

Restrict Users from Running Specific Applications

However, that won't stop folks from doubleclicking the *.cpl files and launching Control Panel applets that way...

Hello

I think that a better solution to your problem
would be TweakUI. This is a nice tiny program
made by MSoft to customize Windows9x/ME/2K.
You can download it from this page and install it (following the instructions you'll find there). After installation, go to CPanel, make a shortcut
to TweakUI - it will be on desktop, but you suppose to move it somewhere out of everyone's reach. Now, you can double click TweakUI, select Control Panel tab and uncheck all <apps>.cpl and then close everything.
When reopen Control Panel, it will be empty.
When you wish to modify some settings, you access TweakUI via the hidden shortcut, recheck what you need...

PS: I believe you have backup images of your
Win98 systems, made with Norton Ghost / Drive Image.
