my monitor flashes sometimes like it's going out. Do you know what is happening and what the cause of it it? Also is there a solution to prevent my monitor from blanking out?

    I got a Gateway VX700 17" monitor.

What do you mean by "flashes" and "blanking out"?

A little more detailed info will help to get an insight on the problem.

You could try flexing the cable every few inches between your monitor and the PC to check for a bad cable and reckeck the plug connection to the graphics card as it looks like its losing the signal mommenterily.

First thing, check the power cord to the monitor..

Is the machine still working when the monitor blanks out?
