    Lost sound

Last night while listening to internet radio I lost the sound. Not entirely as it's now alot quieter.

I'm running a MSI KT3 Ultra2 mobo with onboard sound. I've tried restoring a ghost image of my XP Pro system, uninstalling the sound drivers and reinstalling, and checked the wires going to my stereo. And ran the wires to a different input on the stereo. Same quiet sound problem.

This mobo is about 2½ months old. I've checked it for leaking capacitors and don't see any.

    Any suggestions? TIA

Did you check to see if the sound wasn't Muted? You may also go to Master Volume and check if there's something muted there also.

Fuelm@n, thanks for the response. Yeah, I had checked that several times. It was like I had about 5% of the volume and very bad sound. I could crank my stereo all the way up and get tolerable volume. But the voices were distorted, bass had dropped out, etc. I finally went and got a Creative SoundBlaster card and put that in.

    That fixed the problem.

Do you know if this is a typical failure on mobos? Up til now I had never had a failure of any kind on a motherboard.
Doesn't bode well for buying an MSI board next time around. Hopefully nothing else fails on it and I won't have to try to RMA the thing.

Anything is possible, and nothing surprises me.

Did you disable the onboard sound also? I'm sure you did... 2½ months mobo, I'd be writing up and calling for that RMA.
