    Unhappy Hardware problem!

I have already posted a similar thread on here about this!
I thought i had fixed it but i havnt!

I have recently bought a new pc case!
When i came to installing all my equiptment in this new case i found that the ide cables were not long enough for both cd rw and dvd rom drive, so i decided to go without the dvd until i get a new ide cable!
I have recently purchased a long ide cable and put it in!

Since i have done this neither 3d mark or any games will work on my pc? however i have no troubles getting on the net!

I have returned to using my old cables in hope that it will work again, but it doesnt!

I have dismantled my pc and rebuilt it, re seated everything and done a clean up of all the boards.

I have also checked to see if there are any file conflicts which there are none, i have done disk defrag, system restore, disk clean up and checked for any viruses.

How can changing the cables perform so much damage?
I have checked that the cables are the correct ones!

    Can anyone help me please?
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

Well...first off: I hope you can get that stuck "1/!" key fixed....

Second; The CD-ROM/cable issue should have no effect on the 3DMark utility...that is a different issue.

Third: When the cables are hooked up, is Windows recognizing the drives? (Check Drive Manager). You may have the cables on incorrectly. Make sure the red-striped side of the cable is oriented on Pin #1 on both drives. Also check the jumpers: Are you slaving one drive to the other? Make sure the jumpers are set accordingly.

Check those things and post back. Also tell us what OS you are running.

hi, yes i have made sure that the wire are all inserted correctly and i have also put the old ones back in, still doesnt work!

I have checked that the drives are recognised, which they are.
Yes the slave and master jumpers are correct, i have double checked to make sure

I am using xp pro btw

I thought u can not put the cables in wrong as they have a tab on the under side and one if the pins is blanked off?

    Thanks for ur help btw
    Still not any better

OK...then lets delve a little deeper: Is it that CD games will not play at all? Can you access a data or game CD through Explorer or My Computer? Any error messages popping up? In other words, we need to know exactly what you mean by "it doesn't work". This is beginning to sound more like a software problem rather than hardware....

I can play neither cd games or games that are stored on my harddrive,
I have no problems looking for game info through c: drive though.

Also some of my icon pics seem long to be loading up?

Besides a computer troll -----> ....there is no telling what happened. But it may have been a program running in the background that was chewing up CPU cycles (although I've never heard of one that would cripple a system that bad).

I would try. Just make sure they are oriented correctly and well-seated. Afterwards, check all the other cables and make sure you didn't bump them accidentally during the process.

    Walker2009,

You can get 24" ide cables so that you can reach your dvd and cdburner. I originally had to move my dvdrom and cdburner as well as 2 harddrives down 2 notches, putting my 2 harddrives underneath my floppy drive because the ide controllers on my new p4 motherboard were near the last pci slot. I recently purchased 2 new 24" ide cables and can now put my optical drives back up near the top of the case where they belong!
The standard length for regular ide cables is 18".

OK this problem is really beginning to get on my nerves,

The power on my street went off for a short while and when it came back on i had the same problem as before,
What can be causing this to happen?

I am getting the same symptoms as before, only i have not touched the cables, like i said each time this problem has occured the power supply has been removed prior to the problem?
I am getting no error reports,it just freezes, my monitor goes into standby and i have to reset.
On restart the pc performs scan disk and finds no errors and then it is like normal only i cant access any games.

    Any ideas?
I dont want to leave this without fixing the problem!

    Cheers in advance

    Dave

Again the problem seems to have fixed itself? *strange*

Ive decided to do a full format and see if the problem persists,
at least then i will know if it is a hardware fault and not a software one.

My pc must be possesed! well strange!
