RAMDrive
Is there any way to make a Ramdrive larger than 64MB?

Add the size you want to the end of the line, ie;
Device=C:\Dos\Ramdrive.Sys 1024
You can specify a value from 4 to 32767, size is in kb. The 1024 above will give 1mb.
You can also use a Devicehigh command to install.

I'll have to investigate further, you'd at least need to overcome the 64M addressing limit of HIMEM.SYS, or find a ramdrive that uses raw Extended Memory. The HIMEM.SYS from Win98 can recognise more than 64M, but that would mean you'd have to run DOS7.

How do you make it 64mb? All that I have seen have a 32mb size limit.
But the answer to your question is YES! I devoted a few pages to Ramdrives. The Uberto RAMDISK can make up to 2gb drives. While Windows 98 can make RAMDRIVES up to 32mb, you cannot use them with Windows. Microsoft's site says you cannot use Long Filenames on Ramdrives over 10mb in size. However, I cannot get RAMDRIVE or RAMDISK to work at any size with Windows 98.
However, Windows 95 doesn't have that problem. My system has 512mb of RAM and I have used Windows 95 without a problem with a 500mb RAMDISK. My problem was getting Windows 95 to work on my Asus P4S533 with a 2ghz P4. We worked that through on asus P4S533 and Windows 95.
With older DOS, the Uberto RAMDISK utilities has a SETXMSTO.EXE utility that allows you to set the HIMEM.SYS to recognize all of your memory. Search the internet for fu_rd19i.zip . You should find it from several sources.

Since I haven't got everything set up on 95 yet and Windows 98 is having troubles, I have no direct comparison. As for the RAMDISK, I used my Creative Wave Studio to edit a 40mb WAV file. I tried it swapping to a hard drive, then swaping to the RAMDISK. I took 15 seconds to perform an edit on the disk and 5 seconds on the RAMDISK. I wasn't that impressed as I expected the RAMDISK to perform much faster than the disk. The same function took about a minute with my Pentium 200mhz computer. If I edited a really large file, the hard disk may be substantially slower under the sustained transfer. It would appear to be mostly increased processor speed. But where I used to watch the progress bar in anticipation, it just blinked on the RAMDISK.
Another use I have for it is saving the hardware. I was playing an RW with MP3's on it today. The Lite-on was cranking it 40x continuously which concerned me about its longevity. I know the high speed is not necessary as they played fine on my HP8100. If I copy the files to a RAMDISK, nothing will be wearing out. I had done that with Slideshow screen savers on my other machine.
My kid wants this machine. He plays games that would take advantage of its capabilities. I just got it so it wouldn't be obsolete for a few weeks.

oops I meant 32MB
Ramdrive works fine with my Win98. It just isn't much good if it is only 32MB.
I tried to go to the Ramdrive page you refer to in your message but all I got was....
"Sorry, the page you requested was not found."
Perhaps you could repost it? Thanks.

Try it again. I left the L off of the extension html. Ramdrives
I had RAMDISK working with Windows 98fe. And I did get it working sporadically with this Asus. But I was not able to use Long Filenames . Then the system crashed when it was on. So I stopped trying. When I want to use it I run the 95. I hope to try to find what files are conflicting in 98, But that takes time and mind power. So I procrastinate.

Eeyore, you've done my work for me...
I was also going to check out if Marko Kohtala is doing anything with the dynamically resizable SRDISK these days.

You can download fu_rd19i.zip from The Simtel.Net MS-DOS Collection . If you do a search for fu_rd19i.zip you will find many other sources for that utility (Franck Uberto RamDisk version 1.9).
Gonna have to check on my pages. Since I put them up, Geocities changed it so the URL is case sensitive. When I test them with my computer they seem fine. I don't find the error untill I try with a different computer.
Of those you put links for, 1 uses the RAMDRIVE you already have with it 32mb limit. Another has Rameasy, which is in a foriegn language, so I don't know it's capabilities. The Speedcorp link appears to have the Uberto Ramdisk. You'll notice there are many other ideas of what you can do with your RAMDISK.

Hi Eeyore, The Simtel.Net MS-DOS Collection still gives me:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.
I did manage to download fu_rd19i.zip from
http://sac-ftp.gratex.sk/utildisk16.html
Thanks for that
Now I can go and play with my nice new toy

I clicked on the Simtel link and it worked for me. Anyway, if you have the file, you're set. Gald to hear that.
