critical updates
I have 4 Critical Updates waiting to be installed on my WindowsXP home.
I have tried for the past week to install them, but for some reason it comes back with a message that installation failed!
I also have 5 others that won't take, but at least they are not critical.
I went to Microsoft Web Site for help. Lot of good that does, so here I am depending on you guys again.

did you disable any Services under the Administrative tools folder in the Control Panel, if so reset what is disabled to manual. Disabling certain items within that folder is known to cause such a problem with installing critical and uncritical updates. HTH

critical updates
I did as you suggested, but all that came up was pictures of....
Data Sources, performance, componet Source, and computer management.
There were no check marks, just a black arrow pointing to the pics.

Start > Control Panel (in classic mode) > Administrative Tools > Services.
Enlarge the Services window and look down the list (under the column that says Start-up Type) for any items that say Disabled.
Right-click the item and go to "Properties". There you can change "Disabled" to "Manual".

I'm assuming you never disabled anything in the Services program, if not, disregard my post, it'll then be something else giving you the trouble with WU.
Click on Services, in the window that opens, is there anything under "Startup Type" that says disable? If so write them down and post them back here so we'd know what they are.

critical updates
I did find 3 items disabled:
Human Interface
Routing & Remote
WinFax Pro
I set all of them to manual, but still cannot download updates.

This is the exact message I get:

Try this, go to the Start menu/All Programs/ then right click on Windows Update icon and select Run As... Then select "The Following User... Administrator...enter your password...then click on OK. See if that'll help.
As far as the 3 items that were disabled under Services, you can re-disable them again. I was looking for some others items in Services that may have been disabled that do affect installing updates. Thanks.

I had the same problem Tuesday with SP1. Installation kept failing. Not too upset, though, it gave me time to rethink the SP1 install.

Well, I take back a couple of the nasty things I have said about MS, Prompt reply and problem solved. I'll just paste MS reply for the problem here less my case ID etc. I have done as instructed and it worked without a hitch.
From your inquiry, I understand that after you download Windows Updates, you couldn’t install them. We shall be working to resolve this specific issue through the course of the case. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.
Based on my research, please perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:
1. Closed all open programs, including McAfee or other Anti-virus program.
2. Deleted C:\Windows\System32\CATROOT2 folder.
3. Repeated the attempt to install Windows Updates.
4. Check the problem.
If you have any more questions about this particular issue, don't hesitate to contact me. At this time I suppose you have no further questions and I will close this issue. If you have any questions about the specific issue, please reply this email. I will follow up as soon as possible.
Hope this works as well for all as it worked for me. I was abit queasy about deleting the folder so I made a copy of it just in case needed but as stated it worked perfectly,,,, No reformat needed.. Praise be to Bill and tech support.

Thanks, Chief. I wonder if
"2. Deleted C:\Windows\System32\CATROOT2 folder"
is "generally" helpful advice, or if it is unique to your particular download problem on your particular machine in this particular situation.
In other words: Is this something we should all do if we have a problem installing an update after downloading it?

I didn't give them any info. about my machine, just stated the problem and they came back with the above reply, so I would say that its a generic fix for this problem. If in doubt make a restore point prior to doing it. It sure made my day.

I think we have a winner here!
Today, I checked my Windows Update site and found a recommended update that downloaded but wouldn't install (I tried three times). I tried Chief's fix (from MS) and it worked. I just deleted the C:\Windows\System32\CATROOT2 folder and tried again, this time successfully.
Thanks, Chief
Thanks, Microsoft.
