    Network Win3.11 to Win98?

Need to network a Win3.11 machine to a Win98 machine, with just 2 nics and a crossover cable. Do I need to install Win3.11 for workgroups? What about just installing Win95 on the machine? If I did this will all the programs and data still be there after upgrading to Win95? I know how to setup the network just don't know anything about win3.11? I don't have a copy of windows for workgroups but do have win95, also I think the machine would be to slow if installed win98.

    Thanks

You will need Windows for Workgroups 3.11 minimum. If you have server software like Novell, you could set up a DOS network before starting WIndows. You are then limited to what you have set when you started Windows. I have also done this with Windows 95 which supposedly doesn't like DOS networking.

If you have a slower machine, especially with limited RAM (less than 32mb) Windows 98 will be much slower than Windows 95. I still use Windows 95b on my newest machine (2ghz P4).

If you are installing Windows 95 Upgrade, it is most likely osr1 (Windows 95a). If it is the Upgrade version, it should keep all your current programs and settings. That might be the easiest way. There are update patches you should add to that version as well.

    Hello,
I am presently running a Win 98SE/95a network with 2 cards and a cross over cable. The Win 95a machine is a Pentium 60 with 80 mb ram. It works great !!!

If you're upgrading 3.1 to Wind 95, none of your data should be lost. However if you have the means to back up that data onto a separate storage medium than your hard disk, a reformat and clean install of Win 95 is the preferred method.
