    Fixing bad sectors

Machine is running DOS ver. 6.6, I think he said. It keeps giving him boot volume errors. He asked me if there was a way to fix this, and I told him about IBM's fix program. I am now not sure if this will work with his DOS version. Will it?

Hi photolady, I think the last "stand-alone" version of DOS was
6.22, however, whichever version it is, you should be able to run scandisk to fix boot sectors. Or perhaps he could do fdisk /mbr, just depends on the specific problem he's having.

Either way however, he should probably replace the hard drive, (they're cheap), after he gets the info he wants off that one.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the IBM fix program.

EDIT: Also occured to me, if this is happening on boot-up, its possible, and likely, that the motherboard battery is either weak or dead. These are also not very expensive and reasonably simple to replace.

Thanks for the uppence on the version. I wasn't sure what he said other than version 6 something.
I'll have him check his battery too.
IBM's fix it disk I've heard about from others on an IBM drive I have for a laptop. I just figured it might work for any IBM drive, but wasn't sure about using it in this guy's computer.
I have an old 486 here but never have booted it. I thought maybe if the drive I have in there would work in his machine, I'd just give it to him. I doubt I'll ever use it. The computer was given to me.
