    fixing word docs?

frequently people here get word documents emailed to them and a lot of times we can't open them. I have word XP, and this particular doc was created with word8. It really is a word document and the best wordXP can do is recover the text out of it (just like if you were to open the word doc in notepad.exe)

Is there some kind of tool to fix corrupted word documents or something that like that?

You might want to try WordRecovery.

thats, however wordrecovery I couldn't get to work at all, it's says there is susposed to be a File - recover option in word, and there isn't.

and docsrepair seem to orgainze the text better but I think it didn't work well because the info in the doc was in a table. I'll have to try docsrepair on the next corupt word doc I get that doesn't have tables

    Go to: http://office.microsoft.com/download...nverter|Viewer

and in the "Search For Downloads" area, key in the product (Word) and the version (choose from 2002, XP, 2000, 97/98, and All Versions).

Then select "Converters and Viewers" below that.

    Word 8 = Word 97.

You should already have the converter (but have not installed yet.)

Insert the Office XP (Word XP) disc.

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Microsoft Office XP (or Microsoft Word XP) | Add or Remove Features | Converters and Filters | Text Converters | Word 97 for Windows.

Set it to run from the hard drive. Go thru' the rest of the wizard to install the converter to your hard drive. That should do it.
