    Question Messenger popups

Lately I have been getting popups (messages) that say at the top "Messenger Service" .Even when I am not logged into the internet I get these messages. I have cable modem (roadrunner)and windows XP.I have cleared everything out with Spybot. I dont have a firewall installed though. I find them to be a headache but this could be the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

right click on my computer, select manage, double click on services, scroll down to messenger , disable it.

you can do as you please, ive had it disabled on my machine for almost a year without problems or another program running in the background

You'd be better off using a firewall such as the built in Windows XP firewall or a product like ZoneAlarm to prevent messenger services spam rather than by disabling the messenger services.

the only diffrence i noticed with it disabled was that i did not get the pop ups from norton and other programs that let you know you need to update or that your av files are up to date. i enabled it and used zone alarm to stop them, has worked so far.

It seems that you were receiving unsolicted messages sent across the network, or the Internet. That is very likely why you were receving them. The messenger service is actually intended for network alerts by system administrators. It's a tool that is built-in with some Windows operating systems (Windows NT, 2000, and XP) that can only send messages one way.

You can see how this works by performing the following test:

    1) Click "Start" and select "Run" from the menu.
    2) Enter "cmd" (without quotes) and click the "OK" button.
    3) In the command window, type "net send 127.0.0.1 This is how it works" (without quotes) and hit "Enter" on the keyboard.
