Can I make More Room for the Names under my Icons?
Does anyone know if there is a way in Windows 98 to show more text in the names that appear under my icons? It appears to have a limit of 2 lines of text under each icon, but can I change it to 3 lines? Or can I widen the text space allowed to each icon so long names are not cut off?

Hi,
I just right-clicked and renamed one of my desktop icon to see what would happen and this is what appeared under the icon:
"This is the local weather website that I check about 4 times a day because the weather is so cold up here that at times I just get sick of it"
Spaceman
...more will be revealed.

If the icon is single clicked on it should show the full text, (ie the focus is on that icon).
If the focus is else where the text displayed will be limited and will show ..... to indicate that there is more text.
Hovering the cursor over a non focused icon should pop up a litle box with the full text.

You're right Nix. The "..." indicates there is more text, and I can see it when I click on the item. This applies to every window for every folder I open, not just the desktop
But when if I like to see my icons and know what they are or what they contain at a glance (i.e., without having to click on each one)?
I know that with folder windows, I can switch to List or Detail view. But just out of curiosity I was wondering if there is a "tweak" to the system that will work for icon views and for the desktop. (No big deal if there isn't ... as I said, I'm "just curious.")
BTW, Spaceman, can you actually see all that text you typed under your icon - without clicking on it? Aw c'mon, tell us how you did it.

You can right click on the desktop, select properties, select appearance, click on the drop down menu to select Icon and change the size.
It will show more text , but also make the icon bigger

Thanks for the tip, Nix. I didn't even realize that enlarging the icons makes more room for their names until now. And not only that - it also enlarges the icons and increases the text room in any window containing icons.
While I was in the Desktop Appearance window trying out your tip, I noticed that listed under "Icon" were "Icon spacing (horizontal)" and "Icon spacing (vertical)." I played around with those and found that they too will influence the amount of text that is displayed.
I increased the horizontal spacing from 43 to 65 (pixels, I assume) and this had the effect of stretching the icon title room lengthwise. (Now "Network Neighbo" says "Network Neighborhood" like it should.) Just right-click on the desktop and choose "Line up Icons" so their names don't meld into each other.
Again, it works on all Windows, not just the Desktop.
