    Off-Topic

I just wanted to suggest that it would be a good idea, if drvirtual had forums, for off-topic. Like music, games...so on!
I am a man who walks alone
And when I'm walking a dark road
At night, or strolling through the park
When the lights begins to change
I sometimes feel a little strange
A little anxious when it's dark

No can do. The brass hats upstairs shot this idea down a long time a go.

The simplist explanation is abuse. It's too hard to keep tabs on off-topic discussions AND ensure the integrity (and usefullness) of the community.

On the old (now defunct) No Wonder site they had just such a forum, and though it was sometimes interesting, it was also the only forum on the site where regular flaming wars went on. I think the VirtualDr powers that be a quite right on this one.

They learnt from what HWC's OT forum eventually became.

I've gotta agree - i've seen too many technical forums with OT forums that have gone down the tubes. It usually goes something like this:
    • Serious technical forum exists with OT component.
    • People get into the OT side of things, and OT becomes popular.
    • OT becomes a major drawcard to the site - suddenly you have members who are there mostly for the OT and less so for the technical stuff.
    • Eventually you get a bunch of people who start to hang out just for the OT forums. Some of those turn out to be trolls, and OT takes a nosedive in quality.
    • Eventually those people get bored waiting for the latest flames to arrive in OT and they start stirring up trouble in the topical forums.
    • The site admins get sick of it and close the OT forums down.
    • There is a great wailing and gnashing of teeth and whinging about how it's not fair, and people don't have to read OT if they don't want to, and it's impinging on people's frea speach (sic), and the site is about to dry up completely, and so on.
    • The people who really got into OT find another forum, often created by one of them specifically as a destination for displaced OTers, and move on.
    • Original forum eventually settles down to be pretty close to what it was originally, with the occasional return visit from the banished ones as they whinge about how dead the place is to them.
    • OT forum takes off and OTers are generally happy.
Moral of the story - if you want technical discussion, find a technical forum. If you want general chat, find a board for that. If you want both, post on two boards. Don't expect one site to be everything to everyone.

There are a few Tech boards that I belong to that OT works just fine....but this one here is not one of them.....OT was tried in a few different forms here...and it just does not work on this site....so all I can say....if you really have a need for OT...then find a place that allows it....but please come back here to Vdr for your tech needs as this is the best forum for that.

Hehe, this truelly is the best forum for tech! I took a big look around it and... well I'm amazed! People know a lot about computers, so if I have a problem I know where to go! I tried other ones like SharkyForums (has anyone heard of it) but I'm impressed by this one! Thank you a lot guys!
