Question Ping okay - but no web pages

    HI Ppl,

Having bother with a Win98 machine which I have been asked to fix. I think the user has been deleting files that the shouldn't but here goes:

She is a Windows98 PC which has had both I.E. 5 + 6 on it. I have connected it up to our office ADSL line using a router with DHCP (this definatley works!) - all settings are correct. The PC is able to ping IP addresses from a command propt & gets a reply. It doesn't seem to be able to resolve DNS queries, update NAV2002 or display web pages.

Instead, it very quickly comes back and says that it can find the page / liveupdate server etc.

I have reinstalled Win98 over the top of the existing installation (to see if it would replace missing files) - no workie! Also, I've removed NAV2002 and IE6 (were back to IE5) - still no workie!

Also, I've taken off TCP/IP, then reinstalled it - still no damned workie!!

Getting a bit stuck now - can you help!!??!

    Nelson

Hi its been over a year since i done this so i could be wrong.(configured with btopenworld)

in the tcp/ip settings under dns settings.

    enable dns-

    Host :Router address (eg 192.168.0.1 ) Domain : btopenworld.com

    under Dns servers type :

router ip (eg 192.168.0.1) the click on the add button - click Ok then reboot and try it.

The Btopenworld.com in the domain part of this doesnt mean you have to be with btopenworld it is just using its server for dns resolution.

if this was installed part of btopenworld the instructions i found where a bit misleading for a beginner (i had to install one as part of a network job ).

maybe you could copy all the settings off somebody elses machine.

also the default gateway should be the router address.

    hope this helps mike

    I can ping both...

The router and DHCP config are correct, so changin the DNS servers is not an option (5 other PC's on same network work okay with the same settings)

Also - I have scanned for viruses etc using latest defs and a different PC. NAV2002 says that "Email scanning failed to start" when the PC Boots, which makes me think its a socket problem.

There is no firewall on it and I have tried overwriting the winsock files - still not working??

    Its got me..............

If the winsock files were corrupt you wouldnt be able to ping.

the nav error your getting usually indicates a tcp/ip error.

also what are the settings for the other pc's ?

    Daizy....

Tried the fix & guess what - IT WORKED!!!!

Seems like the people who had this machine have been installing all manor of junk from the web & in paticular a program caled NedDotNet??

Well - accroding to the URL you gave me, this is a problem program which if removed incorrectly (as this particular instance was), messes up your winsock & registry settings.

On swift run of LSP-Fix and we're happy (very happy) again!!

    Thanks v. much
