Redhat, suse or mandrake will do the job, suse being my personal favourite out of the biggies, but im not sure if you can download it, go to http://www.linuxiso.org to get the latest images.

Keeping windows me wont be a problem, just dual boot it, any of the distros i mentioned above wont have a problem setting this up automatically during the install, if there is any manual configuration required it will be done via a gui in the install process, simply just a matter of pointing it at the right partition.

To set up ics you will need to first set up a lan then the windows box as the gateway, then just point the linux box at it. (So simple in theory is'nt it, lol )

I've started recommending Knoppix to people because it runs off your CDROM (no install) for trying Linux out. It is a bit slower, but if you have a decent machine and all you want to do is try it out, then it's a relatively hassle-free way. And if you want, you can install Knoppix on your hard drive (I've never tried this): http://www.freenet.org.nz/misc/knoppix-install.html

Knoppix you can download from one of the mirrors from the site I posted, or if you want something more direct here is one in the US:
    ftp://uiarchive.uiuc.edu/mirrors/ftp...linux/knoppix/

make sure you get the english version (unless you prefer german

The "Live Eval" iso image for SuSE works like Knoppix and lets you run a basic version of SuSE from a cd instead of being installed to the hard drive.
The folks at SuSE don't release complete installation isos, but they will still let you install it for free directly over the internet. It does require a broadband connection to the computer though. I did it successfully usin the instructions on this page:

Lycoris isn't a bad one to try also, and only takes one cd for the basic install.

A which distro is best thread?
Just shows how tempting a question this is.

All of the above posts point you in the right direction. Knoppix is absolutely fantastic for a "run from CD" "no hard drive install" Linux. Knoppix is the friendliest Debian you will ever meet.
Mandrake, Red Hat, or Suse for (usually) easy install and use.

A 'Which disto is best' thread starts all types of arguments and conflicts, just do a google search on the topic and you will see what i mean, a which distro is best FOR YOUR NEEDS would be more suitable for this board.

For what it's worth slackware is my personal choice.
