CDRW Unable To Read Burn Speed

Strange problem. I am running WIN XP with a Lite-On 24X CDRW drive. I have had this computer and burner for exactly one year. During this period of time I have used more than a dozen brands of media with no problem. Recently I purchased 100 Sony Supremas 40X CRD's. My burner recognizes them as 16X only. I have tried 5 CDR's from this stack and the result is always the same. My friends computer using a Plextor 48X burner properly recognizes these CDR's as 40X.

What's going on? Is the problem in the CDR's or my burner? Has anyone else ever encountered a similar problem with a burner that fails to properly read burn speeds?

    Thanks for your help.

Could be a firmware read error on the drive you might try looking up the manufacturer to see if an update has been issued.

In my humble experience this is pretty normal. Somedrives like this type of CDs better - some like that type better. In my own case I have a stack of Mr.Platinum CDs - half of them bought as single CDs in paper sleeve and the other half on a spindle - other than that they are exactly the same. But my Plextor drive simple doesn't like the spindle CDs - sometimes won't recognize them at all. With the paper sleeve CDs no problem.

Another brand (BestMedia) wasn't recognized by my old HP burner - they work perfectly in the Plextor drive.

I guess it's just one of computer-nature's freaks....

I believe Kallikru is correct. I traded those Sony CDR's with a friend for some unbranded generic CDR's in a spindle marked "Jensen". They are 32X and my 24X burner correctly detects them as 24X. I guess I just need to avoid Sony CDR's.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.
