IE6 The Page Will Not Display or DNS Error but the page will display in AOL!
Hi,
I prefer to use IE to surf but there are some webpages that will not display in IE but if I try the IE browser in AOL 5 I will access the page. Three sites where this happens are:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/foru...ty,1~mode=flat
http://content.nejm.org/
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/Categor...1,,405,00.html
I have emptied my Temp.Int.files and history and restarted the computer, but it hasn't helped.
A friend suggested I use some anonymizer page to access the site - it did work, but when I tried to use it again or continue to search it said I had to purchase it! I asked an AOL tech if there was a problem with their DNS server and he didn't know what I was talking about.
Does anyone know why I can't access certain pages with IE but can access them immediately thru the AOL browser? I find this very frustrating.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Nancee
Edit: Also, under Settings in IE for TIF, it is set to check for newer version every visit to the page.

Hi you could have an errant host file do a search for *host and open any dated differently to the others in notepad, look for your sites if there, then delete this host file do not delete any other host files.

Are you using windows 2000/XP?
Windows 2000/XP has built-in DNS (Domain Name System) caching, which basically caches resolved hostnames for faster access and reduced DNS lookups. This is generally a great feature, with the only downside that failed DNS lookups get cached by default as well... When a DNS lookup fails (due to temporary DNS problems), Windows still caches the unsuccessful DNS query, and in turn fails to connect to a host regardless of the fact that the DNS server might be able to handle your lookup seconds later.

Hi Jenae,
I just did a search for *hosts and found two hosts.sam and two LMHosts.sam relating to AOL. All have the same modified date and two are created Oct 12 and two are created Oct 13. I opened them and they say they are sample hosts files. The only other items I have listed relate to Spybot SSD: Hosts.sbs brought up the program, and there is Hosts.sbs.sig (1 kb) and it was one line of computer language, boxes, etc.) There is also a hosts.zip and the properties say it has to do with Spybot, Updates.
I looked in Spybot and when I clicked on hosts nothing was listed but there was an option to import Spybots Hosts - so I don't have that either.
Hi EzeeBob,
No, I'm using Windows 98se. I'll look at that link you posted in case anything might apply to me.
Thanks both of you. This is a very strange problem. If you have any other thoughts please let me know.
Edit: I'm on a dial up.
Sincerely, Nancee

Hi yes AOL some like it, others the opposite, it leaves files on your system and can be the cause of all manner of mischief, one of those personal things, I could never recommend it. I hate to have problems that do not seem to have solutions you could as a last resort reformat that would get rid of any Aol problems. However I would firstly try to reinstall IE over the top of itself. When you have the DNS problem on these sites check the window that is open look at help and see if there is any change in this to your normal window, sounds strange I know however I have found this to happen in 98 where the version of IE reverts back to an original install usually IE4. If this is the case then you have to revert back to the previous version from add/remove and then download a fresh install of the latter version of IE.

Hi Jenea,
I just tried one of those pages. Help still shows IE6 with all of the updates. About 2 months ago I had called AOL regarding this and one tech had me remove everything in Windows Setup under communications. I came across 2 websites advising this, but they also direct you to edit the registry to remove the Wsock32. In any event, after that I wasn't able to access the web at all! So I removed IE6 and still couldn't access the web. Then I removed AOL and reinstalled them both. I could access the web but the original problem of some websites not displaying in IE has remained. I guess I'm lucky I can access these sites in the AOL browser.

Hi Nancee
This is from aol help under 'Why can't I access ceratin websites'.
It may help you.
* Are you using firewall software?
Firewall programs can also cause problems accessing web sites. If you are using one (examples are ZoneAlarm, Norton Personal Firewall and McAfee Personal Firewall), disable it and try accessing the site again. Please contact your firewall software vendor or refer to the software manual for instruction on how to disable your firewall software.
* Is Internet Explorer corrupted?
If Internet Explorer is corrupted it can cause problems accessing web sites. It is not always possible to repair Internet Explorer but you could try the following steps to see if it helps:
1. Close all programs down then click Start, Settings and Control Panel (On Windows XP you may not have the Settings option).
2. Double click on the icon called Add/Remove Programs
3. Look for 'Microsoft Internet Explorer X.X and Internet Tools' - where X.X is the version number, for example 5.5 or 6.0.
4. Select it and click Add/Remove (on Windows XP it is called Change/Remove)
5. Select the option for Repair Internet Explorer and press OK and then Yes
6. If this does not work, fails to repair or the option to repair is not available you could try installing Internet Explorer from another CD.
* Remove the AOL Adaptor
1. Close all programs and restart the machine.
2. Click Start then Programs (or All Programs on Windows XP)
3. Point to AOL and click on AOL System Information on the menu that pops out.
4. Click on the Utilities tab and click the button 'Uninstall AOL Adaptor'. AOL will reinstall the Adaptor the next time it restarts.
Now try going to the Web site again. If this fails to resolve your problem, you can speak to an AOL technician online at AOL Keyword: Tech Chat

Hi T Jolly,
Thank you for finding that information. I don't have a firewall and about two months ago I removed IE because after dealing with the AOL techs I couldn't access the web with IE5 or within AOL. Then I removed AOL and could get access when I reinstalled it. So I went ahead and reinstalled IE6 with all updates. The problem is only with a few websites so it's frustrating, but I can live with it. I guess it can't hurt to remove the aol adapter though. I do have a lot of sites in the restricted zone, but I believe that would hold true for IE and the AOL IE.
And I was able to access one site on IE going thru that Anonymizer site.
Sincerely, Nancy

Hi,
I found this information at a M$ KB site:
"The Wsock32.dll file included with Windows 98 Second Edition is 40 KB in size, with a date of 4/23/99."
I just checked mine and it has a date of 11/15/99. Can anyone running Windows 98se please check with Find>files or folders what their modified date is.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Nancee

Hi Onyabikeladdy,
Thank you for checking the modified date on your file. It seems that the modified date doesn't matter; the file version and size are important and mine are correct.
It seems that the sites IE can't access are always the same - and now and then I experience a new one.
I don't know anything about DNS (if that's the problem) to figure out what's going on.
Rebooting my computer doesn't help - does that help you?
Sincerely, Nancy

Hi,
I just checked out a link re settings in IE (from another thread) and came across this:
"Enable Install On Demand. Ticking this setting will enable IE to download any components necessary to view a webpage, e.g. A language pack or Shockwave. You will be prompted for permission to download the component. Unticking this setting will disable Install On Demand, which could potentially cause problems viewing certain webpages if you don’t have the necessary components installed."
I have both enable install on demands in IE6 Settings/Advanced unchecked. I feel this is safer. Could this be causing my problem with IE not displaying some pages while AOL will display them? I know that even if I have download disabled in IE, I can still download from AOL mail because their mail d/l settings are within the program.
Sincerely, Nancee
