    MSI and AMD

    Looking at various MSI mobos and AMD XP CPU's there's some discrepencies between what MSI thinks it's mobos will handle CPU wise and what AMD thinks MSI's mobo's will handle.

    For instance, MSI says it's MSI KT3 Ultra2 (MS-6380E) mobo will support up to XP 2200+ while AMD says the same mobo will take up to XP 2700+.

    Any thoughts on who to take seriously?

    I would go with what this one claims HERE

    Difference might be that board came out before the 2700 so they did not have the info at that time.

    Check MSI's web site to see if there is a BIOS flash allowing the higher CPU's for that board. Its common for Mobo manufactures to have original specs on there website without mentioning that with a flash you can run other CPU's than was stated when the board first hit the market.

    Thanks for the answers. I guess it's hard to tell if the info you're getting is the latest. Apparently when MSI links to an AMD page it isn't the latest.

    I fail to follow you here. The MSI link I posted for you stated it supported up to 2700.

    You already said that AMD said it supported the 2700.

    Where is the problem?

    When msi released the mb a 2200xp was probably the highest
    cpu available.
    So when amd release a 2700xp , of course it will fit.
    So will the new 2800xp.
    As long as the archecture (socket a ) stays the same any new amd cpu will fit.

    Not only might the BIOS be older but MSI loves "revisions"...

    I would go with MSIs suggestion after all they designed it...

    OPOVET2, sorry I wasn't very exact. Your link was up to date, the links I had been following before weren't. Your link cleared things up for me.

    The links Googlegear provides to the manufacterers websites were just plain old links. I'll keep this in mind next time and check a little more thoroughly.

    Either way, I was tending to go with what MSI recommended.
