Folder Options, File typed and Office2000

    Hi
I have just upgraded to XP pro from W98. When I go to "control panel" - "folder options" and "file types" I get a list of icons but no file types associated with them.... and then up pops a little window to say that these are in Office2000 and that I should insert a CD. This repeats itself even after"cancel" (several times). So, where are the file types located and does this matter anyway? (I suspect it will do when I come to click a file with a "unknown" extension) I do not have Office 2000 - did have Office97 though. Thanks in advance.

if you open windows explorer and hit tools, folder options, you can hit file types and it will show you what you have.

yes - file types eventually tells me what I have and the file extensions....however when I open file types I initially get a "searching torch" and a window opens telling me I need to open Office2000 CD. It takes maybe 5 attempts to cancel this. How do I get rid of the Office 2000 prompt?

if it is an office file, and you have another office installed, change the open with command to those files. if you dont, you might back them up just in case and try deleting that file extension, for example someone may send an email with an attachment with a file extension not installed on your machine, so not every file type is on every machine.

I am not sure I have explained the problem properly. When I go to "tools" - "folder options" - then the "file types" tab - the dialogue box opens with a blank (empty) box under "registered file types". The search/browsing torch appears and simultaneously another window opens asking for the Office 2000 - "the feature you are trying to use is on a CDRom or other removable disc that is not available" underneath which is "insert microsoft office 2000professional disc and click OK" . By the time I have clicked cancel many times the list of registered files has appeared.
I am not sure what is happening but would like to get rid of the window asking me to put in a CD which I have never had - i.e. this is an invention of my XP setup not a legacy from W98. Presumably the list of files for the "registered file types list" is not where XP expects it to be and hence the searchlight and subsequent dialogue window??

sorry i misunderstood your original question. that is odd, ive done an upgrade install to 98se, repair installs, run fdisk, reinstalled partitions, fresh installs all of xp and never run into that problem. here is a pretty usefull link, whether or not you can find the solution to this there im not sure, but its a bookmark site.

Thankyou for the excellent link. Unfortunately I can't find what I am looking for there....it seems that trying to find the file extensions on this computer is a prompt to install MS Office200 Pro - which I haven't got - the pop-up window is preceded by a "preparing to install" statement which I had missed before. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I now find I am getting exactly the same problem when I go to Search - for files or folders. It seems to act as a prompt for Office2000 pro to install and after cancelling several times I get an error 1706 "no source could be found for the product....". Anyone got any ideas. Please!!!

    Thumbs up

Ho Ho.....SOLVED. It would seem that at some point Office2000 had been partly installed (Powerpoint applications) - so in add/remove programmes there was an entry for Office 2000 - I had the chance to uninstall/change/reinstall - so uninstalled and all is now working just fine. Thanks for your help.
