Either an XP compatibility issue, or a faulty motherboard PS/2 port.

And what I meant was, replace it with a plain keyboard that doesn't require special drivers

    Ok
Start in Safe Mode | Safe Mode with Command Prompt and Start from point 14, I suggest that you print this out
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most

It wouldn't let me do anything with the system file 'cause it was being used. I also notice that I do not have a system file in my temp dir, so I wouldn't have had anything to copy back anyway.

This is very weird, how could a clean install corrupt the registry

Does anyone think that the following article has anything to do with my problem?

    Start with Step3

    But Step1 could apply also.

No luck with the Intellitype program. I guess it's a BIOS upgrade then, pretty scary stuff. Either that or do you think I should just forget it and swap my new keyboard for a USB one?

I notice in your original post you say you upgraded , if so do a clean install of XP - this is precisely the kind of problem that people invariably get with an upgrade install. If you did in fact do a clean install, then start over and install WinXP from scratch. Sometimes things get corrupted, and this is one of those weird ones that has that sort of smell about it!

The first time I installed it I did the upgrade, but decided I didn't like that. So I did a clean install, but still had the problem with the keyboard at the end of the setup program. Then I did another clean install to try and fix that, but it still didn't work.

Got another keyboard, try it. While installing. I would anyway.

    Figure this one out ...
I decided (before I reinstall Windows) to see if my old PS/2 mouse would work. It did, and so did the keyboard???????
So I tried my USB mouse through the PS/2 adapter and that worked also. So the keyboard works as long as there is a mouse plugged into the other PS/2 port.
