On one hand, XP will make better use of your hardware. On the other hand, XP is full of bloatware. Also, XP is here to stay and you'll increase your overall PC knowledge by using it.

Then again, if it ain't broke.....
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

I made the switch from 98SE to XP Home Ed. a few months back and never looked back since. With your specs, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. This forum has many brilliant & experienced XP users and is here to help. That was one reason why I confidently made the switch.

    cheers

I installed XP Pro twice to dual boot with 98 SE, but every time I got irritated with XP I'd switch to 98 SE, and both times I uninstalled XP.

I finally decided to give XP a good try, so I installed it after a format, so that I couldn't switch back to 98 SE.

That was three months ago, now I wouldn't go back.

One of the things that made the transition a little easier for me was to get rid of the eye candy and use the classic style.

I switched from 3.1>95>98>ME to xp and I wouldn't look back.

XP is far more stable than 98.

For what you use your comp for xp home should be fine and as Raz says you can always set it to classic style that gives the appearance of 98.

If you decide to make the move and have any problems the people here will help you without hesitation.

Also, since you've had probs with 98 you really need to reformat and do a clean install.

first off, if money isnt a huge issue go with XP pro
second, dont upgrade make sure you backup ALL data needed to CDR/CDRW or another existing drive and do a clean install of the OS.

I just upgraded from Win98SE to WinXP Home. I love it. I would never go back.It is a much more stable OS compared to Win98SE and my wife loves it for her digital photos. As far as Pro vs Home try this link. It compares the two. Use the one that is most compatible with your needs.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

If you don't need and you don't think you will ever need the extras of Professional then go with Home. If money is not a problem, go with Professional. You can get in from http://www.tigerdirect.com for 159.99. Cheaper than I have found in the local stores.

If there are three pieces of advice I can give, they are:

    1. Do a full format and install Win XP, even if you have the upgrade you can do this.

    2. Be sure that your current system is compatible as far as hardware and software is concerened. You can use the Hardware Compatibility list located on the windows website if you need assistance.

    3. Do not install Roxio or Adaptec Easy CD creator. XP does not like the program for some reason. I found this out the hard way.

You can get it [XP Pro] from http://www.tigerdirect.com for 159.99.
$139.90 at Microwave ( http://mwave.com ) with the purchase of hardware. You might find it for less. Do a search at Pricewatch.

Do not install Roxio or Adaptec Easy CD creator.
I use Adaptec's Easy CD Creator a few times a week with no problems. Just disable XP's CD program.

If you have enough hard drive space, partition it and install both. It's great to have a backup system partition for those times when disaster strikes. I'd be surprised if you don't have a few applications installed that just won't run on XP. I originally set up a dualboot because Easy CD Creator 4 won't work under XP, but I also have some games that my kids are fond of that work fine on Me, but not on XP.

    Hi
Which ever version of XP (pro or Home) you get, do not buy the full version, you will pay a lot more for the Full, and the only difference between The full and the upgrade is there is one extra file on the upgrade version, which is used to verify that you have a previous version of windows (98,ME,2000)
Install the upgrade on a clean hard drive, setup will pause and ask you to put a previous version in your CD-ROM drive, follow instructions, and setup will continue.
I cannot emphasise enough there is NO DIFFERENCE between the Upgrade and the Full, except that extra file, and most of all the price.
You can do the same with 98,ME,2000 upgrades as well.
Never install an O/S on top of a previous version,if you can help it, it is always best to install on a clean Hard Drive.
You will save yourself some Hard drive space and some money.
