Question How can I make these GIFs?

What would be needed to make a GIF out of a video image? I want to make a GIF from a VHS tape, like a video clip from the tape and convert it to GIF. I'm sure it’s possible but can it be done reasonably with cheap freeware. I wouldn’t have to buy Photoshop would I? I'm thinking of some cheap video editing program that would take the VHS clip and give me individual pix to place into a GIF constructor prog to make the GIF. Is there such a thing?

Hi.. it seems that doing this would be a two step process.. converting the VHS tape to a digital format on the computer (avi or mpg ) and then capturing the images and converting them to gifs..

Here's a page on the first part with some freeware progs listed..
(you'll need a video capture card BTW)

and then Irfanview, a really good and free pic/media viewer/editor will make gifs from avi's.

    uh... why?!?

Are you trying to make an avatar?!?

There's a program called AVI2Gif but the quality is'nt there...
But then again a Gif of a video will be very large...

Your going to need a video input on the computer to copy from the VHS...

When I convert video to avatars I use MyFlix to edit the video then use Animation shop for the final editing of the Gif...
I just got Nero Video Epress but have'nt tried it yet...

    **random thoughts...

YES! That’s just what I want to do. Their are some Charley Brown stuff that I would love to make into gif's for avatars. I have looked for them already made but to no avail. You would think that since the guy is dead now that their would be no copyright on the cartoon or something.

Those programs you mentioned,$$$ are they hard to use or learn to use? What kind of video input card do you have to install?

The 3 Stooges have been dead for many many years... Just try using there image...

This is'nt as easy as you would think...
Finding freeware or shareware ai'nt easy either...

I found FlyCap that should capture the video but does it as an AVI...

Once you capture it then try using Video Framer to edit the AVI...

Get it exactly the way you want it then use Avi-Gif to convert it...

I've never done it this way so I'm not sure how well it'll work but all the programs are free or shareware so your set to go except for the capture...

    Good Luck...

-edit- Any TVTuner or video card with an input should work...

Gif is not the way to go to do what you want. And unless you want to pay Unisys $5000 for using the format, I would stop using it.

Use Multiple-image Network Graphics which will render full color instead of 256 colors.

Here is an example. There are tons of freeware and shareware that will accomplish what you want.

OK... So I dl some software to creat MNGs and IE wo'nt open it nor could I upload it...
    Animated JPGs need javascript...

Both are "useless" for making avatars...
Kinda like Linux... The idea is nice but in practice,,, and a MS world,,, its useless... Lets not start the flaming in this thread...

Gifs are the way to go until ALL browsers and websites become compatable...

Not trying to flame here but MNG's work with Mozilla, Netscape 6.0 and above, and other W3C compliant browsers which IE is not. I would assume MS would get their act together and fix their CSS issue and provide MNG support and a host of a hundred other issues with IE with the next service pack or version.

MNG support for IE is available through 3rd party plugins.

    That's not flaming...

Even using a compatable browser MNGs are useless for an avatar since it ca'nt be uploaded to a/this forum...
