CD RW and Firewire IEEE connection
I have just tried to install a CD RRW using a Firewire connection but it is not being recognised by my computer. I have installed a PCI to Firewire host adapter but the Texas Instrument OHCI compliant IEEE driver from windows is not "working properly" and has a yellow backgroungd exclamation mark in Device Manager with a "code 10" error when I look at settings. I cannot find a resolution to this. Is it because I am using W98 (not SE) or is there an IRQ problem? Any suggestions? MS Q276602 seems to apply only to W98SE and Milenium. Should I take the PCI and CD back to the shop?

Hi Beggarall
I am using 98 SE and the USB connection tu run my CD Burner which is a dog slow 6x5x4 unit, but it works great and has created only 2 or 3 coasters in a year of use.
I am not sure that 98 (any version) supports firewire someone else would have to comment here. SE and I believe FE 98 OS's support USB I believe version 1.1 and maybe the newer faster 2.x version?
If the unit is able to operate using usb I would try that, as I indicated previously, I am not sure that 98 will support firewire, I believe one has to have 2000 or XP for it to be supported by the OS. So the PCI card for Firewire may be useless on a 98 system - Don"t know for sure.
If the driver for the Firewire PCI can not be installed without a yellow indicator - indicationg a conflict somewhere It may possibly be resolvable but you would have to provide information about the conflict to have someone more knowledgeable than i to assit you.
It may be that the conflict can be resolved if it is an IO or some such conflict by changing it to use another.
I understand your wanting to use Firewire for your external CD burning because of the relative speed, it just may be an OS thing.
It may be easirer to install an internal CD burner if you are using a Desktop sustem and you have an available IDE. (good speed)
Otherwise it may be that you will have to use USB Rather than Firewire with a 98 system
Good luck, I sure hope someone is able to assist you, or at least provide a more to the point explanation of options with the OS.

Try the 98se drivers. Before installing clear the drive in device manager. Secondly did you go into bios and let the new hareware and drive get detected? This will be required each time you add or remove a hardware device. reInstall only the card first then check device manager, then shut down and add the hd with bios routine.
You could provide the make of the interface or search for drivers and some more system info would help. Like are you running the cdrw and another cdrom? perhaps try the try another pci slot, too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try the BIOS approach and use another PCI slot . However, I think it needs W98SE or better so it is back to the drawing board..and practise art of skillful negotiation at the retailer!!! Is it worth upgrading to W98SE and if so, can I do it online (for free?)??

Hi Beggarall
Not aware of any free source for 98SE(short of warez sites) but you should be able to pick up a 98 SE upgrade disk fairly cheaply at one of the on line stores, eBay and some of the others.
I bought an upgrade disc whay back when 98SE was the "new OS" for under $80 retail. They should be dirt cheap with the os'es at M$ at XP at present.
Perhaps others on the forum have noted sources and will be able to point you in the right direction
