EMM 386 Not Installed XMS Mgr. Not presetn

I get a message as follows: EMM 386 Not Installed XMS Manager Not Present Press Any Key to continue.
At the same time this occurred, My Atapi CD-Rom and secondary hard drive disappeared. Internet Explorer and Outlook Express will connect through my ISP but I get This Page Cannot Be displayed and Cannot poll for messages. Would it be best to format my C drive and start from scratch. I've tried uninstalling OE and IE but that gets me no where. Please help, about ready the trash the thing. No viruses are detected and my subscription is up to date.

Despite your scans with the latest antivirus defs, I am still suspecting a virus. One of the latest viruses that came out (opasrv) was not detected initially by the current virus definitions. If you are getting the error during boot up, before WIndows loads, I suspect that there is something in your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files that is causing this and possibly your other probems. If you could post the contents of those files, we might be able to determine the culprit.

How long have you been getting this error? The more info you give the easier it is to diagnose and resolve. The two files that have become problematic are memory manager files often victims of a virus but this doesn't necessarily mean you have a virus.
What changes have been made, i.e. any new software or hardware added in the last couple of weeks? Here are a few of things you can try before format and reinstall: running scanreg /restore to a date prior to errors; renaming autoexec.bat and config.sys, rebuilding the system.ini; scanreg /fix; running debug; fdisk /mbr. Good luck if you need assistance with any of these tasks post back and let us know how you are getting along.

Thanks for the replies. I've already ran reinstll of Win98 and done a partial restore to see if that fixes the problem. No new programs were installed when this problem occurred. I will uninstall Norton today and see if I can get my definitions updated so I can scan for opasrv virus.
I'll try to get the autoexec.bat and config.sys file contents posted later today.

Can't get my Norton to recognize my internet connection to update my subscriptions. Re-installed Norton and can't get it to recognize that I'm connected to my ISP.

Try renaming autoexec.bat and config.sys through DOS first

The problem was that HIMEM.SYS (the XMS manager EMM386.EXE requires) was REMmed out. Remove the REM TShoot: DEVICE=D:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS and replace it with DEVICE=D:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS or DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS, depending on which directory actually contains HIMEM.SYS.

One other minor detail, modify the REM TShoot: DOS=HIGH, UMB to DOS=HIGH, UMB

You must have following lines prior to any lines in your config.sys:
device = c:\windows\himem.sys
device = c:\windows\emm386.exe /noems
dos = high,umb
Please look at the correct spelling.
It will solve your problem.

I simply got tired of nothing working so I formatted the C drive and used my HP Simple backup. Everything looks good now with the exception of my D drive still not being recognized. I use it for backup of documents and photos. How can I get the drive to be recognized. Step by step instructions would be great. I renamed my HP CDRW drive to E.

Is your 'D' drive another logical drive on your hard drive, a separate physical hard drive, or a CDROM drive?

I tried to add the strings in config.sys but when rebooting it said they were bad commands
When in DOS I can't type config.sys and get anything but a bad command
What am I doing wrong, I gave my dos for dummies away and now I could use it. I've fogotten all my dos commands

Check your BIOS is the drive seen here? What options in th BIOS do you have as far as storage go?

2MB or 2GB? 2MB is awful small, and might be an RLL or MFM drive... I'm guessing you meant 2GB due to the rarity of such old drives.

As was suggested before, check your BIOS settings. You may want to make sure the port to which it is connected (Primary Slave or Secondary Master or Secondary Slave) is set for Auto detection.

To EDIT the CONFIG.SYS, just type EDIT CONFIG.SYS when at the C:\> prompt. Or, you can go to Start, Run and type sysedit if you're in Windows. (In fact, do that and copy/paste the contents of CONFIG.SYS into a post here, so we can see exactly what's in there.)

Those "For Dummies" books are great-- but for a pretty good DOS reference on the web you could try Vernon Frazee's DOS help.

I took the computer apart, cleaned it and disconnected the cable from the Atapi CD Rom but left it connected to my secondary drive D. Started up several times and the D drive was there everytime. The connection to the Atapi cd rom was bad. All seems to be working properly so far. Good thing we have the laptop to use or I would have really been in trouble.
