Disk cleanup not responding
I am having trouble with disk cleanup whenever I run it it just stalls, I start it up and it says Calculating Scanning: Compress old files and the blue bar never moves I left it for 5 minutes and it just sits there and then I have to use taskmanager to close it.

does it say "running" when you bring up task mgr.? if there are alot of old files its compressing, it can take awhile.

The image above is all I get it just stays on that and does not move, by the way I told it not to compress files so its not doing that, also when it is running and not doing anything my computer runs at a snail pace until I use task manager to close it then the speed it okay. What else is wrong.

what i was curious about was if task manager said the program was running or not responding, i have no compression set up to, but it still compresses old files. if i havent run disk cleanup for a week or so it takes it awhile to run. if task mgr. says the program is running, i would suggest to let it go even for an hour. something else, see what programs you have running in the background, disk cleanup will use alot of cpu, if other programs or services (that you dont know are running)are trying to use cpu too that would result in crappy performance. you can find that out in task mgr. too click the processes tab while you are running disk cleanup and see what else is happening in there. heres a link to clean up memory and cpu hogging services in xp. www.blkviper.com

I realize this is one of the standard replies, and that it's a real pain in the a#% to do, but:
Turn off ALL programs other than Explorer and Systray and run it again. Should be major differences in performance.
Various Windows and Linux platforms...

reddice, i had a similar problem with battlefield 1942, it was working then it wasnt, the only difference is when i asked someone for help and they gave it, i tried them until i found the solution that worked. i doubt your machine will heal itself. if you are reluctant to try any suggestions, why ask the question in the first place.

I had the same problem and used the following fix that I located at another xp forum to correct.. go to start/run/type regedit..hit open...navigate to the following key..[hkey-local machine\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\volumecaches\compressoldfiles] r click on registry key and select export and save file to were you want...delete the above key ..reboot and run disk cleanup...once completed you can go to saved reg. file and r click and select merge the key will be merged back into registry..credit moskowa1 at yahoo for the fix...i do not plan to merge reg file back in that is your option.. take all necessory precautions in dealing with the registry...hope this helps
I always say if it ain't broken, break it, then fix it!
