    Can't delete oddball (P_x) file???

    I noticed a P_x file with no extension (3753KB)in my C: root directory this morning. I tried deleting it in both Normal & Safe mode to no avail. This message appears "Cannot delete file File system error (1026)". I also tried creating a new folder and dragging into the folder and I get a message "Cannot move file System error (1026). The only thing I did was to defrag my registry using System Suite 4.0 which I've done numerous times before. The file attributes are all unchecked and there is no MS-DOS file name. The time of the file corresponds to the appx. time I defragged the registry & rebooted my computer. The computer is running fine and I've run a full virus scan and Ad-aware and no viruses or spyware was detected. I'm using Windows 98SE & IE 5.01SP1. Anyone have any ideas what this file is and why it can't be deleted. I can delete files to the Recycle Bin and delete them from the Recycle Bin.

    Note: This P_x file also shows as a hidden file(has the faint icon)but no attributes are checked under the General tab(the only tab)in the file Properties.

    Thanks in advance,
    Tufenuf

    Have you:
    A) peeked inside to see what it contains.
    B) tried to move/destroy it under DOS mode, (where windows can't get you.)
    ME = Missing Elements
    XP = eXpermential Program

    I can't find a single thing on a file called P_x, let alone in relation to System Suite.

    If it really does have something to do with System Suite, it could be a temporary file, or registry backup created by SS, ~4MB sounds pretty close to a .reg file.

    Have you tried searching the registry for any reference to the file? You might try to find the location of the temporary files directory used by SS in the registry, too, and see if it is C:\. Can you rename the file to, say, a .txt file and look at the contents? Can you copy it over to a floppy and try booting to DOS and listing it? Deleting from a boot floppy?

    I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to delete it... make sure you have at least 100MB free disk space. Also if you have the recycle bin configured to delete immediately, uncheck that box.

    THIS is the official MS knowledge base doc, but it isn't a whole lot of help...

    I remember I once had a directory stuck in my FAT, somehow I got the directory "wolf3d" permanently etched into my drive. (This was when Wolfenstein 3D came out though, and I don't think I was using Windows...). I think I ended up FDISKing it in the end...

    Good luck anyway!
