Broadband Download Rate.

Hello,

I have been a member of this forum for some time now and have always received help and been grateful for it. I just have a basic question about broadband as I have a connection via BT Openworld only from today. Up to now I have been using AOL on dial up and my connection was typically 44 - 45,000 baud and when downloading it was at approx 4.5k per sec. With Broadband my diagnostics say my connection is 576 k but my downloading varies between 5 - 30 k per second.

Sure 30 k is much faster than before but I was expecting to get approx 60 - 70 k. Am I just being optimistic ? A friend of mine can d/l approx 1 meg of data in appox 9 secs. (We both have the same type of 512k connection.) I know he is much nearer to his telephone exchange than I am.

Is there anything I can do to speed things up or is it just a question of proximity to the telephone exchange as BT stated ?

If anyone can think of something I am doing wrong I would be glad to hear any suggestions however this is not urgent - I can surf and download. I just want to know if there is something I have not done but should.

Any tips / ideas would be welcome.

If you haven't been to www.dslreports.com/ they have some tools (Speed test and Tweak test ) that should help.

yea, what wonderinguy said, dslreports.com will help you greatly, visit the tweaks forum, look for the link for drTCP, it will help you with settings that will give you some more speed, it helped my speeds on my cable modem service...

The download rate is mostly dependent upon the source of the download rather then where it is.
I get excellent download speeds from Microsoft which is on the other side of the US from me. I get around 200kbps.
I site that is right up the street from me I get the best at around 100kbps but usually around 30kbps.

DSL reports your peak values which shows what a single packet transferred at.

Try www.numion.com/yourspeed/ for a good average speedtest and in the UK or where ever you like. Have your friend test there too.

Thanks for the above hints / tips. As I said it is not really a problem as I can surf but being new to broadband I just want to make sure my connection is optimised.
