Internet explorer problems could it be zone alarm!

    Hi guys,

I have a problem here on a customers machine i keep getting "Server not found" (in title bar) "page not displayed" i tried a few things like checking if somebody had changed the dns settings etc.... also tried deleting wsock32.dll and winsock.dll ,reinstalling internet explorer and upgrading the comp for windows 98fe to se still no joy.

i did the system file checker (sfc) and still that didnt work so i decided to uninstall zone alarm(free version) and reinstall that.

after i reinstalled za i opened up internet explorer and expected it to ask permission to go on to the internet it didnt it just opened up and gave me the error page not displayed so i thought it could still be a problem with za and upgraded to the latest version but still the same problem.

Then i decided to uninstall za again with the uninstaller and not have a firewall on there it still didnt work.(also followed the instructions on how to manually remove it on zonelabs site).

while i was on the net look for a answer i came across a knowledge base page saying the norton firewall can cause this problem when uninstalled it still blocks ports and it said reinstall it and restore defaults (cant find these in zone alarm) then uninstall.

my question is can zonealarm still block ports when it is not installed ? if so how do i open them.

I also tried to ping websites(from command prompt) but i just times out. i thought it could be a modem problem so i changed the modem for a different one the same here. i then connected it to our network and tried using internet connection sharing on it and it still has the same problem.

checked all the tcp/ip settings i.e dns settings gateway and wins all default settings as they should be.

im out of ideas now! could it be a virus?

    Thanx mike

Edit : - also when i connect to the internet i look at the connection and choose details and it has got "password protocal" on most comps i have used i have only seen "challenge handshake authentication protocol"

    system :

    p2 350
    win98se (was 98fe)
    64mb ram
    ie6 (was 5)
zonealarm 3 was a earlier version
56k modem now intel ambient v90 was a diamond supra
    now networked and using ics.
