internet sharing using dsl

I need some assistance.

Have 2 machines one with Windows XP Home the other Windows 98 2nd edition.

XP machine has the dsl connection using nic card.
98 machine has integrated ethernet
Approximately 20 feet between machines.

Have done this before using ishare and wingate but not when machine is using dsl. Do not want to purchase ishare or wingate if possible.

Assistance would be appreciated.

My first suggestion is to use a router/switch to do the job rather than a software solution. Linksys, DLink, Netgear all make excellent devices and you are looking at around $50-$60 for the device. Setup is pretty automatic and you can then get to the net with either PC without the other one running and do good, fast networking between the PCs as well.

Otherwise, ICS (and I'd use the XP box as the host) will do it in pretty much the same fashion as wingate did. For specifics, do a search on here using ICS DSL and you will turn up lots of recent how-to articles. ICS doesn't really see much difference in dial-up, cable, DSL modems.

Your the big shot on both sites I see. I'm impressed. I use both at times and have always been pleased with the people who respond. And again I appreciate your quick response but I have to ask. Is it not possible to do the following.

XP machine already has its nic for the dsl modem but would need another nic for the 98 machine to connect into. Install netbeui on both machines and enable file and print sharing. Or is this too easy to be true ? On the 98 machine uncheck bindings to tcp/ip and check bindings for netbeui and basically the same on the XP machine for the 2nd nic card.

Again there are only the 2 machines and security really is not an issue.

Again your knowledge is appreciated.

If you are using it just for sharring the connection, then yes you will need 2 NIC's one for DSL and one for LAN setup lan as per-normal and then download a proxy like AnalogX from www.analogx.com (Would you believe...LOL) Easy to use proxy has WWW, socks, smpt, nntp, pop.

In doing some more research it appears that buying a cable router box seems like the best way to go. In this situation only the machine using the connection needs to be on and from the diagram I've printed it does seems pretty easy to setup.
