    Office XP or 2000?

Have a friend who is going to buy xp pro for his laptop, and he asked me which would be better to run, Office XP or 2000? I have XP on my machine but have never messed with 2000, so I don't know what the differences are.

Is one better than the other? I've done some reading on each and have found more negative posts on XP, but nothing real serious...mostly about the activation.

Doesn't Office 2000 require activation as well? To be honest, aside from the smart tags and some other fancy looks I really can't tell the difference from the XP and Ofice 97 I used to use.

I guess the one thing I would be concerned with would be the compatability between the different versions. For example, I'm sure if I open a 97 word doc in xp it would convert and open, but what about the reverse. Can 97 read an xp or 2000 word doc, and if I edited that 97 doc in xp, would I be able to save it in the 97 format if needed?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

As I remember, most of the Office 2000 CDs do not require activation. M$ started to impliment it towards the end of the release and for some of the separate components.

There are more bells and whistles on XP (voice dictation) as compared to 2000 but for every day ordinary use there should be no differnece between the two.

As to compatability, you can always save a doc files in Save As to make sure of the compatability with any Word version but between XP and 2000 it should not be a problem as they use the same file system.

    Hope this helps.

One thing I really like about Office XP is that it lets you check multiple email accounts on the same screen. Plus it lets you read your hotmail or http based email right in the Outlook window. This was a big time saver for me as I have 4 email accounts that I check regularly. In Office 2000 I had to create different profiles for each account. Now I can set it to check one account after the other and it dumps it all into the same place. Plus I can move messages from my hotmail account when it gets full by dragging and dropping them into my inbox in Outlook.
    Just my 2 cents.
