xp wont boot or restore

XP home won't Restore or reinstall. Won't boot into Os
AMD 1600 40 gig maxtor partioned into three drives
xp home installed on C drive Have installed win 98 on d drive and can read from c drive I think their is also a E drive that is formatted as ntfs.As cant access it under 98.
In process of booting in xp os I get the following message.
Windows has been shut down to protect the computer, The problem appears to be caused by the following file , ntfs.sys

I can boot and run the machine on win 98 but a lot of programs on the c drive wont run. win 98 was installed after machine wouldn't boot.

Put your XP disk in and Reboot. Choose to repair the installation. It should fix the boot problem you have.
