I hate WKDetect

I uncheck WKDetect in msconfig startup. Next time I access MS Works, it automatically rechecks itself. I think this program may be giving me problems and I do not want WKDetect to run at startup. How can I disable it for good? If I could find the file I could probably rename the exe extension to something else, but I can't find the file. It is supposed to be at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works, but it is not there - even with hidden files enabled. Worthless XP search can't find it either.

Is there a place in the registry where I can kill it?

This is driving me nuts.

Go into Registy (regedit)

Browse to key: HKeyLocalMachine - Software - Microsoft - Windows - Current Version - Run ---- delete the wkdetect key out of the Run folder and it will disappear from MSCONFIG.

Thanks Brilly. I did that. But as soon as I access an MS Works spread sheet, it reconstructs the registry value and rechecks the box in msconfig. It's all back again.

This damned thing just will not go away.

Open your works program and click on customize. Take the check mark out of Update/notify me updates. I was plagued with that same problem for months. I'm running 98SE but should work the same way.

That was one of the first things I did. That box is unchecked.

Okay Rwinegar,

Try this......take the checkmark out for wkdetect in msconfig. Restart your system. Do a search for wkdetect.exe and rename it to wkdetect.old. Reboot again. Now open MS Works and see if it puts the checkmark back in there. It shouldn't.......

Another thing to try: (found this on google.com)

Wkdetect is the Microsoft Works Update Detection tool. Check the setup and configuration settings for your Microsoft Works. If you have it configured to "automatically check for program updates" then it will replace the wkdetect entry each time you run Microsoft Works.

None of these ideas worked. I did uncheck the automatic updates in Works earlier. It didn't do anything.

Believe it or not, the file which is the target of this msconfig startup, WKDetect.exe, does not exist on my computer or on the M/S Works installation CD. I know this sounds hard to believe, but please take my word for it. I do not have this file. It is supposed to be located in C:\Program files\Microsoft Works. It is not there or anywhere else in my computer. I even did a wild card search (*.exe) and scrolled through every executable file in my computer. It is not there.

It looks like it is impossible to delete this item from msconfig startup.

My last suggestion, when you uncheck WkDetect in your misconfigure startup, be sure you scroll all the way to the bottom to look for more of the same entries. I had three in mine. Wish I could be of more help.
