    Question Remote Desktop over modem

    I believe this is possible, but the one chance I've had to test this out it didn't work... mainly because of the weird setup my office phones have.

    I would like to be able to avoid using pcAnywhere (or any similar program) by using only Windows XP components. I would like to connect to a Windows XP Professional computer directly with a modem. I would not be going through an ISP, but PC to PC. After establishing the connection, I would like to open a Remote Desktop session to control this PC.

    I have done this in the past with RRAS and Terminal Services on Windows 2000 Server, but Windows XP is a much cheaper option. Technically, what I want to do should work... I just don't have a lab (or time) to test it. I was wondering if anyone out there has tried this or would like to try it to help me out.

    Remote Access

    What you want to do is actually very easy in XP.
    There are two gotchas:
    * allowing incoming connections, and
    * allowing others to access the computer.

    You have to allow incoming connections so that the modem will answer when you dial.

    You have to give other access, so that you can use the remote desktop. Make sure you check the remote desktop options before you connect so that you aren't playing the sound on your local system - especially on dialup.

    If you need more info - let me know.

    Thanks for the input... I did already know about those areas. The box we'd be using would be an OEM system built by my company... we would enable the Remote Desktop before we finished building the system. As for the users, the people dialling into the box will have Admin rights and techincally wouldn't have to be give the specific right to use Remote Desktop since Admins are automatically given the right to connect assuming they do not have a blank password.

    As for the incoming connections, this is just something I've never tried on a Win2K box or a WinXP box. I've done it on 2K Server, but RRAS is a totally different beast. The one chance I had to test it failed and our "funky" phone setup at work was probably the culprit.
