    Exclamation Stuffed Autoexec.bat file

    I all,
    The problem goes like this...
I was tying to change some stuff in the autoexec.bat on my 486 with win 3.1. Now all my computer does is churn and load the win splash screen and then freezes at that point.
Please help. I only have today to fix it so I can give it to my grandmother in two days!!!
    HELP!
Is it possiable to skip into DOS before that happens? thanks for any help people.

If you are running DOS 6 or higher, when you see the message Starting MS-DOS..., press the F5 key and it will put you at the C:\> prompt.

The MS-DOS boot disks available at the bottom of this page should include himem.sys.

Are you sure the file is actually MISSING, or is the line in CONFIG.SYS written incorrectly? Did you use DIR /S /A HIMEM.SYS when in the root of C: to search for the file? (The /S makes it search subdirectories, the /A will show it even if hidden.)

If you have Windows 3.1 installed, then you should have TWO copies of HIMEM.SYS to choose from-- the one in C:\DOS and the one in C:\WINDOWS . If you have DOS 5.0 or higher, the one in \DOS will be just fine, if you are running a version lower than 5.0, you should use the one in \WINDOWS for best results. (Either version should work, in all actuality, but the more recent version should work 'better'. I may be wrong about which version is newest, check the time/date stamp on the files to see which is newer.)

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS or DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS should be in the CONFIG.SYS.

This person is saying that he is using Dr-Dos on this PC?

It really sounds like he deleted the root directory on that PC. This was a common issue with Windows 3.1 users!!

Ok, does the computer boot up to drive C:? If it does, do a DIR of drive C; and let us know what is there.

also type in ver and let us know what version of DOS this thing has.

Then do your Grandmother a service and go buy her a 'newer' PC. Please!!

I don't think osamathegrouch ever said he was using DR-DOS. I did notice that you posted a link to drdos.net earlier, and I was confused as to why. Perhaps you saw my signature and somehow attributed my DR-DOS to osamathegrouch.
