Leading Linux Distributions Become LSB Certified

This may be of some interest to some of you out there.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - August 14, 2002 - In a move that will ensure the continued growth of the Linux industry, the Free Standards Group announced that three leading Linux distributions have become Linux Standard Base (LSB) Certified. MandrakeSoft S.A., Red Hat, and SuSE Linux AG, have all achieved LSB Certification. LSB Certification verifies adherence to the community and industry developed standard for both Linux distributions and Linux-based applications.

A standards base can only be a good thing for Linux, it will attract the big software houses to develop for Linux systems, development costs can be considerably less under a linux system, but that don't mean nothing if each and every distro has their idea about how linux should be, this could also put Linux one step closer to being taken seriously as an enterprise solution,

One thing though, will this push the smaller more independent distro's out of the market, and will Linux loose it's identity with such moves?
