Defrag
We have been trying to defrag our system and it gets about half ways and freezes up? What is the solution for this? Also, how do oyu know if the modem is going bad? We sometimes get a message" modem is missing" or "modem is in use", which is not the case either time. We use Netscape and IE for our browsers. Did the housecall things and got rid of a trojan, cleared the temp files and history on IE, also cleared the cache on NS. How can we defrag and keep it from freezing and why do we get the modem messages? Please help if anyone knows. Thanks.

The modem thing may or may not enter into the mix here, but i'd unplug the phone line to defrag 'til "that" gets an answer.
Make sure no screensaver is running. Right click desktop>properties>sceensaver tab. Settings button on same tab and make sure all are set to: "always on"and "never".
Ctrl>Alt>Del> highlight all except Explorer and systray, one at a time and click "end task". You can also defrag from safe mode(no drivers loaded there). If not familiar how to get into safe mode, let us know...
Stupid question? No such thing!

Pennydog, Do it in 'Safe Mode', scandisk first...

Just in case:
Scandisk and/or defrag
Programs running in the Background stop it.
Turn off screen saver.
Do Ctrl-Alt-Del and close all but explorer and try again.
Upon completion, suggest run defragment.
It can run in Safe Mode also.
Reboot and on startup hold the Control key [F8 if control does not work]
This will bring up the Boot menu
Arrow down [mouse does not work here] to 3. Safe Mode, hit enter
and you will boot to Safe Mode. [Yes it will look funny, very basic here]
[Screen saver should already be turned off] and run scandisk.
Upon completion you can run defragment also. It would be a good Idea as
you are already there.
Upon completion reboot to start you av and other programs
IN DOS
Scandisk can be run in dos also.
Defrag can not
Do the same as safe mode until you get to the startup menu.
Select 5. Command and hit enter.
and you will boot to the C:\ prompt.
Type in scandisk ,
looks like this
C:\scandisk
hit enter
when finish at the C:\ type win hit enter
or for a faster reboot do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete

Thank you for the information. Too late to try it tonight, but will certainly try the suggestions tomorrow. We will let you know if we can get it to defrag. Still need to know about the modem error messages if anyone has a suggestion on that.
