Guess I'd do a search in MyComputer for wordpad.exe, then drag and drop a new shortcut to Accessories, BUT...
didja move or delete any of these:
wordpad.ini
wordpad.inf
wordpad.hlp
wordpad.chm
wordpad.cnt
wordpad.exe
wordpad.gif

I'm sorry, I don't understand the Q as I thought I did:
What does it mean to
"adjust the path to C:\Program Files\Accessories\WordPad"?
On this pc, wordpad.exe path is (and all wordpad files):
C:\WINDOWS\wordpad.exe
with only a shortcut as follows:
C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Wordpad

Thanks Davey, but when I click on a txt file, I get this message:
C:\Program
Cannot find this file
Please verify that the correct path & file name are given
So how do I repair the path name back to
C:\Program Files\Accessories\WordPad.exe
which I know exists.
I can happily open Wordpad, then open the file so I know that Wordpad works
I can also right click and open with Wordpad
I just want my double click back

ah, thanks! now I get it.
I'll bet if you select a txt file >> right-click with shift pressed >> open with >>and check the "always open..." and click "other", you can set the path as it should be.
EDIT:
I dunno, but maybe you have to remove wordpad from the "open with" list before resetting the path?

Put a shortcut to Wordpad on your desktop, then right click it and select properties so you can check the path (Target). That "C:\Program Files\Accessories\WordPad.exe" that you mention doesn't seem right to me. Wordpad is usually in a Windows or Windows NT folder.

Q.
Could someone kindly tell me how to adjust the path to C:\Program Files\Accessories\WordPad, before I lose my mind completely
A.
From Windows Explorer
View > Folder Options > File Types
Scroll to Text document
(Here's where it can be a little different depending on Windows version)
W9x
Select - Edit
OR
W2000
Select - Advanced
Then (both O/S)
Highlight "Open" under action and click EDIT.
Change path under "Application used to perform action:"
