    OLD Compaq Laptop

    Hello,

Someone gave me an old laptop, that I want to give someone else. Keep in mind, vintage items, hard to upgrade, and use current items.

It is a 486 33DX system, with 12 megs of RAM, and about 500 meg hard drive.

NO CD rom, just a floppy and hard drive.

And I want to know if there's away to find software (particularly, viewing software to view .jpg and .gif files)
AND I would suppose a PCMCIA Card for getting on the internet,
That is if its even POSSIBLE to find such a way to get on the internet with quite an old laptop.

    Help would be appreciated, Thanks

Also since ALL I have is a floppy drive, so the only way I can download software from the internet, to my lap top is to put it on a floppy, the software of course cannot be more than 1.44 megs, however... I do have a ZIP drive I can move over onto the laptop, but who knows if it will support the zipdrive.

    Again any suggestions?

It would be a great help if you could beg borrow or steal an external CD-Rom. That's what I did for my IBM thinkpad 486.
Windows 95 went on like a charm, and I have IE 5.5. There is lot's of software you can get for jpegs. My favourite is Irfanview (which does fit on a floppy). I use it on my IBM laptop as well.
AVG anti virus can be downloaded free from the net and also works quite well with the old 486.
Check out www.download.com for lots of freeware.
You don't say what OS you have on the 486.
I recently lent the same system to a friend whose eight month old $3,000 state of the art Pentium IV crashed big time. She was desperate to get access to the internet and the system worked great. (Even without a CD attached).

It has Windows 3.11 on it.... hard to find software esp, 3.11 Driveres.

I am looking for a PCMCIA card modem for it, but do they even have those anymore?

    • Go to http://www.iomega.com/software/
    • Select Zip 100 Parallel Port in pull-down 1
    • Select Windows 3.1 in box pull-down 2
    • Select English in pull-down 3
    • Click the Find button

What, specifically, are you looking for?

    Yes.
