    Question Spider 116

I've been using Spider for some time now and it does a great job. But what does Spider Bite do? How do you use it? All I get is a blank black 'pop up', or the same thing with an error message saying 'can't remove hidden URL'.

    Same problem

    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...hreadid=111398

funny how two people should get the same thing on the same day ??

Needless to say, I was getting this problem on a PC running NT and figured it was soemthing to do with me playing with the register.

After about 6 weeks it just disappeared.

    No explanation as to why.

I'm the guy from the other thread with the SAME problem (Nix linked to above)!

Do you have this same folder holding a new index.dat file:

    c:\WINDOWS\History\History.IE5\MSHist012002071220020713\index.dat

Spider Bite doesn't do anything by itself. If you try to launch it, it won't do anything but give you that popup. It's launched by Spider to get rid of the URL's, as Spider itself only scans for the hidden index.dat files.

    DVOM: thanks for the info.

Davey: no, I don't have any index at all in History. Under Temp. Internet, in Content.IE5 there is an index.dat which gets larger all the time, but Spider epmties it out and takes it down to 32kb (which much be something about the 'operation' of the file). And there is an index.dat in the Cookies folder which Spider takes down to 16kb.

Thought back on this after reading this second post and remembered a similar problem with Spider. I don't remember what was done to cause it,but somehow the temp internet folder was moved into another folder in windows.

Spider couldn't find it because of this. The solution was to go to the tools menu in IE6>internet options>gen tab>under temp internet files, settings button, move folder button. Move the folder back to the windows folder. If a temp internet folder already exists in the windows folder, but does "not" contain "index.dat",it should be removed on re=boot and the proper folder containing index.dat should be there...

Also,as said, don't use the "spider bite" icon to operate the program, use Spider.exe(sattelite dish). To save time just right click it and choose to send shortcut to desktop.
    Stupid question? No such thing!

some (or at least one) of the index.dat files only reveal themselves in the list after the spider scan, I've found - you sure?

Davey, you're right. I hadn't really checked the Spider scan. Spider shows three index.dat in Winddows\History\History.IE5. These only show in Spider not at all in Windows Explorer.

    doesn't that seam odd, jholloway?
Were you only getting that dialogue box becasue you were trying to run Spiderbite independent of Spider?
    Not me.

Anyhow, have you got the problem sorted out yet?

Has anyone heard of History Kill? I downloaded a trial version from Historykill.com and was pleased with it so I bought it. If anyone else has any input about it please post, I think that it does the same stuff as spider does, and gives you quite a bit of control. Hope this helps....

Davey: sorry to be late, I was away yesterday. Yes, I only get the box when trying to run Spiderbite on its own. DVOM cleared that up for me.
