Dc Promo
I have a Server running Windows 2000 & Active Directory, it was an NT4.0 PDC before the upgrade.
The old BDC has since been moved to Windows 2000,but when i run DCPROMO.EXE i get the followin error message:
The Domain "xxxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx" cannot be contacted. Select a different Domain. (If this domain was recently created, its name may not yet be registered with the Domain Naming Service.)
The Domain is in Mixed Mode as we still have NT Servers.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Make sure that your primary server (w/ AD) is running DNS, and that your server you're trying to join has it's dns settings pointed to the main server.
Also, you can make your domain Native as long as your NT servers are not Domain Controllers...if they're just member servers, you can make it native

I have installed DNS and made it have the Secondary DNS Setup for my network.
Now when i try and run DCPROMO i get the followin error message:
The domain "xxxxxx.xxxxxx" is not an Active Directory domain, or an Active Directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted.
Thanks.

Make sure that on the machine you're joining to the domain, that SMTP, and NNTP services are running...I remember when I was having this problem a while back, that I turned those services on and then DCPromo worked.
Also, make sure that on your DC, that the sysvol folder is shared as sysvol

I will give that a try.
I have configured my DNS to be a Secondary DNS for the Domain is this the correct thing to do?
so it has the PDC's DNS Settings in the Forward Lookup Zone.
I am having a bit of trouble gettin it to go back to the error message above at the moment though.
Thanks,
CM.

It doesn't really matter about the BDC's dns...just make sure that your TCP/IP settings have the PDC's IP address in the Preferred DNS box
