NIC Ethernet Cards!!
Hello Everyone, Lets see if this stays here so you can all read it...It Vanished last time.......
I am useing WinXP Pro, ABITKG7-Lite, Athlon TB 1200Mhz, 512Mbt DDRram, AMBIT NTL/Cable Modem USB/Ethernet 128Mbt(stand alone). I'll skip the rest......XP Pro is going very well after about 7 installs.
Useing the Ambit via USB at the moo cause NIC Ethernet Card wont work. I put in an Ethernet Card and my system would not recognise that it was there, took it out, put it back and my system crashed, restarted and stoped at the first screen with a "CMOS has Reset itself to its DEFAULTS, press F1 to continue or Delete to enter Bios. F1 would not work, Reset the Bios, kept doing same thing. Took it back to shop and then bought a different Nic card. Netgear FA311 that everyone says works best in XP. Well I kept haveing same Problem, Kept Reseting my Bios to its Defaults all the time. Any Ideas of what is wrong!!
If its a Bios Upgrade...Forget it...If I even try to do that it will never work again...This was a CLEAN Install of XP Pro and the NIC card was the last thing I put in. Everything else works -bar my Epson 740 software (printer gos Ok otherwise) OK I've stoped ambling on....Over to you nice Folks.....This Still is the BEST FORUM around. Have Learnt a lot since joining. Keep Up Good Work. Catch you Later. yours, Dennis

Is the nic resetting your bios without being plugged into anything?
If so you may have a bad pci slot, if only when plugged in, it could be a bad patch cable or a modem problem, or an electrical building wiring problem.
Have you tried another pci slot?
Post back, there is allot more to check out.
it's just a jump to the left....

Running_on_wheel...Hi M8..This Ambit Modem can either run via USB or Ethernet...I was told that Ethernet runs better and a bit faster than USB....Don't know if that is true, but thought I would try n find out.
onedaddycat....Hi M8..I only tried the 1 PCI slot.(No3)..and that was the one that my old 56K modem worked in. PCI slots available are in order No1, No3, No5 <empty. Tried it in No3. Did not try it in any other because I was a bit afraid to do so after what was happening...Bear in mind this is all on a Fresh Install of WinXP Pro..I did a Release on my Ambit to make sure that it would work and would not look for the USB...Defaulted the Bios with no cable pluged in and with cable pluged in.....I cant check it out again now cause I took the Nic card back to shop. Was afraid I might Damage my computer if I kept trying it in different slots. Have never had a piece of Hardware not being Detected at startup or by pluging in the cable until now, so it baffled me.
Anyway I'm sorry I had a 128 cable modem put in now....Not much faster than my old 56K. Waste of money... stuck with it for a year now..The peeps who can afford 512 are lucky. At least i learn by my misstakes!! Thank You Both for your Help...Always Apreciated this way. yours,Dennis
