    Replacing current system file?

While running SFC I accidently replaced Wininet.dll (current IE5.5 vs.) by restoring the original that came with 5.0 on the Win98SE disk.
What will replace the file to it's current version. Which is saved in the C\Windows\Helpdesk\SFC folder...

Being a system file will I need to DOS and
    > copy C:\Windows\helpdesk\sfc\wininet.dll C:\Windows\System\ Wininet.dll
    Run IE Repair or what?

I had had a couple Illeg. ops. with wininet so when sfc showed file changed I restored before realizing ...of course it changed when I updated to IE5.5 from 5.0.
Now I need to replace the current version.
    Thanks for helping.

A good starting point is IE repair , see if it will let you .

You have a good idea doing it in dos, outside of Windows. And you have the right copy command to do with. Running repair would indicate if it was corrupt, but I think it would recommend a reinstall. I would replace it as you planned. If you still have the IE setup files in C:\Windows Update Setup Files, you could use SFC to restore it from there.

Thanks guys...However, the saved version is no longer there. (?)
So could not restore from DOS command.
IE Repair cannot repair because Wininet version is wrong and recommends a reinstall.
SFC Restore one file cannot locate the file in C:\Windows.5.5 Setup files. (?) Why would it not be in the 5.5setup files???
    Struck out 3 for3.
    Need ...Wininet.dll 5.50.4915.5.
Any advise where I might find it so to replace the current vs.
    Thanks very much.

    Hi Carson,

Anybody with the same version IE would be able to copy that file for you - unfortunately I only have version 6!

Hopefully somebody will post the file as an attachment here for you (they just need to put it in a zip)

You will find it in C:\Windows Update Setup Files\le_s2.cab (could be a capital i, there). You will find that the cab file is a double cab file. When you open it, you will find a cab file inside that cab file, but Wininet.Dll is in there.
    Good luck!

    Well success..sort of.
markp62, thanks for showing me the location. Unzipped the cab (had to use winzip classic, that was new), Copied to C:\.
Then did the DOS copy and restored the file.
    Here's the catch.
The version I deleted was 5.50.4915.5 (In fact most all files in the SFC log show 5.50.4915.5)
The version from cab was 5.50.4807.2300.
Still an older version. So I guess this was updated from something after the IE5.5sp2 update. Would that be correct?
Dont know what program would have updated the Wininet.dll.

If anyone could post a 5.50.4915.5 that I could D/L to update to the proper version I would be grateful. Or provide a link Where I might find it. I'll try to be more careful in the future.
Thanks again for all the help. Kudos markp62 for the file location.
    carson.

    Hi

As a matter of interest I just checked my internet installation disks to check the versions - do you still have any of these lying about - might be worth a look for the new file version?

I also visited the DLL library at Microsoft to see which versions were mentioned there and I can't find a mention of your version.

    http://support.microsoft.com/service...fo.asp?sd=MSDN

    Maybe another update there somewhere?

VP,,, That is strange. The link showed nothing to match. (?)
Below is the SFC log txt. It shows where I restored the older vs. But the other system files show the same version that Microsoft doesnt' have listed. 5.50.4915.5.
I am truly lost now. Why cant I have a simply problem once...
If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate your opinions.
Would there be any problem leaving the version as is . (actually it is 5.50.4807.2300 (restored from 5.5 update cab.)
CRC match is yes with Wininet.dll while others are No. What ever that signifies.
    Thanks again for your time.

    Hi

I don't know if the other version will cause you a problem - I did notice that there were no references to your file version at the Microsoft link - Did you have an add on or update to your IE recently?

Sorry - but I'm as confused as you now - but somebody will come along to help you - don't forget half of the world is still asleep or at work!

It does appear that some program has updated some system files. No update to IE that I'm aware of. After 5.5sp2, the only updates were MS security updates, etc. Dont see a connection.
I'll be back tonight if anyone has a suggestion.
    Thanks VP for your persistence.

If you download and install MS Security Update Q321232 it will update wininet.dll to the version you're looking for.
Please remember to post back whether your problem is resolved or
not, so that others may gain from the knowledge.

Got it. Big thanks johnking and DrMDJ.
Was not thinking the updated version came with the security update.
The 5.12.02 patch restored it to the 5.50.4915.500 version.
The IE5.5sp2 version in my cab file from 5.5sp2 update was 5.50.4807.2300.

Topsie, thanks for the offer bro.
Sincere thanks everyone for the help. I have learned from this.
